Levi George Edgerton was born at North Royalton, Ohio on December 31, 1836, the son of Justus Edgerton and his first wife, Harriet Barber.  Levi’s mother died when he was just under two years old and Levi was subsequently raised by Melvin and Sarah Brown of Hinckley, Ohio.  Levi was recorded with Melvin Brown’s household in the 1850 Federal Census of Hinckley, Medina County, Ohio (dwelling #623; family #626; enum. August 7, 1850); he was enumerated then as “Levi Edwin [sic], aged 13, born in Ohio”.

Levi G. Edgerton was married twice.  He married first, on September 21, 1859 at LaGrange County, Indiana, Fidelia A. Longfellow, daughter of Daniel and Susan Longfellow of Richfield, Ohio.  Fidelia’s mother was remarried at Medina County, Ohio on April 30, 1850 to Matthew Bogardus.  Mrs. Susan (----) Longfellow Bogardus and the five children from her first marriage (Susan E., Fidelia, Charles, Lucy M. and Otis) were enumerated with Matthew’s household in the 1850 Federal Census of Hinckley, Medina County, Ohio (pg. 351; dwelling #571; family #574; enum. August 5, 1850).

Levi and Fidelia (Longfellow) Edgerton had two sons:  Orim L., born July 21, 1861 ( married Tillie J. Illes); and Edward C. born April 7, 1863 (married Cynthia Rothrock).  Mrs. Fidelia (Longfellow) Edgerton died at Hinckley, Ohio on September 21, 1865 and was buried at the Hinckley Ridge Cemetery.

At the time of the 1860 Federal Census, Levi Edgerton and his first wife, Fidelia, were recorded in the household of Melvin Brown in Hinckley, Medina County, Ohio (dwelling #761; family #761; enum. July 16, 1860).  The household was enumerated as follows:

According to family records supplied by Nancy Luther, who has researched the Edgerton and Rice families of northeastern Ohio, Levi G. Edgerton died in September 1906.  This information is corroborated by Levi’s gravestone inscription at Jamesport Memorial Cemetery, which reports that he was born December 31, 1836 and died September 7, 1906.  Also buried in the family plot at Jamesport Memorial Cemetery are Levi’s son, Edwin M. Edgerton (1863 – 1895), Edwin’s wife, Cynthia Rothrock (1866 – 1893) and Edwin’s son, Carl P. (1887 – 1891).

Mrs. Susan Elizabeth (Longfellow) Edgerton survived her husband five years.  Following Levi’s death, she returned to Ohio and was living at Perry (Stark County) at the time of her death on March 31, 1911.  According to her death certificate (Ohio State Death Certificates, #18091), Susan was born in Ohio on June 29, 1834, the daughter of “Daniel Longfelder” and had died at Perry, Stark County, Ohio on March 31, 1911.  She was buried at Akron, Ohio on April 3, 1911.
