The following obituary for Lewis Olcott Edgerton appeared in the Coldwater Republican on Tuesday, December 22, 1891 (transcript courtesy of Diane Hosler):

“Lewis Edgerton died this morning about 7 oclock at his residence on East Washington Street.  He was taken ill with pneomonia which disease caused his death.  He was 64 years of age and leaves a wife and two sons.  He has been a resident of the city for a number of years and was an industrious and hard working man.  He was the father of Alderman Edgerton of this city.”

A subsequent obituary was published in the Weekly Courier (Coldwater, Michigan) on Saturday, December 26, 1891 (transcript courtesy of Diane Hosler):

“Lewis O. Edgerton died at his home on East Washington Street at 7 oclock last Tuesday morning of pneomonia after an illness of about 10 days during which time he suffered intensely.  His funeral was attended at his late residence Thursday afternoon, Rev. J. R. Skinner preaching the funeral sermon.  Mr. Edgerton was born Oct 8, 1827 in Pompey NY where he married Miss Maria Coburn Dec 25, 1849 who died there in 1869.  The following year he married Mrs. Truman Little and a year later came to Coldwater to reside.  Mr. Edgerton had worked his trade (blacksmith) upwards of 50 years and was genial, methodical and orderly in his business methods and thoroughly liked by a large circle of acquaintances.  His wife and two children by his first wife survive him, one daughter dying several years ago.”

At the time of the 1900 Federal Census, Lewis’s second wife, Caroline (Tolman) Little Edgerton, was residing in the household of her son, Fred Little, in Freeport, Stephenson County, Illinois (dwelling #130; family #132; enum. June 2, 1900).  She was enumerated as “Caroline Edgerton, mother, b. May 1825 in New York (both parents born in New York), widow”.

The following obituary for Mrs. Caroline (Tolman) Little Edgerton appeared in the Weekly Courier (Coldwater, Michigan) on Monday, March 16, 1908, pg. 2 (transcript courtesy of Diane Hosler):

“Mrs. Caroline Edgerton died in a Chicago hospital Saturday March 14, 1908 from the effects of a fall January 8 at which time she fractured her hip.  For nine weeks she was a constant sufferer until her death relieved her sufferings.  She was 82 years and 10 months of age and a great portion of her life was passed in Coldwater where she resided for 30 years.  Eleven years ago she went to Freeport Illinois to reside and for the past two years she has been a resident of Chicago.  She is survived by one son Fred Little of Chicago who accompanied the remains to Coldwater.  The funeral was held this afternoon at the home of L. H. Edgerton.  Rev. Louis DeLanarter officiating and interment was made in Oak Grove Cemetary.”
