Linus Edgerton, son of Daniel and Sarah (Lathrop) Edgerton.
Phebe A. Oliver
Children:
Linus Edgerton was born on October 4, 1803 at
Tolland, Connecticut, the second son of Daniel Edgerton Jr. and Sarah
(“Sally”) Lathrop. Linus was raised in
Tolland. His father died when Linus
was eight years old, and for a time, Linus and his siblings lived in the
household of their grandfather, Daniel Edgerton Sr. Upon his grandfather’s death in 1825, Linus
and his four siblings each inherited a Bible, as stipulated in Daniel’s will. Linus Edgerton removed to Morris County, New
Jersey, where he was married and resided for most of his adult life. Linus’ wife was Phebe Ann Oliver, a native
of New Jersey. Census and probate
records establish that Phebe was born in New Jersey circa 1819 and that both
of her parents were born in New Jersey.
Her parentage has not been ascertained. An Ann Oliver (born in New Jersey circa
1844) was recorded residing with Linus and Phebe in both the 1850 and 1860
Federal Censuses; and a Mary L. Oliver (later Mary L. Hawkins) was recorded
residing with Linus and Phebe at the time of the 1870 Federal Census, and was
also one of the witnesses to Phebe’s will.
The will of Phebe’s husband, Linus, establishes that Phebe had a
half-sister, Anna B., who married Joseph Steventon. As far as is currently known, Linus and Phebe had
only one child – a son, Edwin, born in Hanover, New Jersey in October of
1849. There is no further account of
this son beyond the 1860 Federal Census, and it is probable that he died
before his parents, as he was not mentioned in either of their wills. The household of Linus Edgerton was recorded in
the 1850 Federal Census of Hanover, Morris County, New Jersey (pg. 148;
dwelling #243; family #276; enum. August 14, 1850), as follows:
At the time of this census, the family was
residing in the same dwelling as the family of Susanna Scott. The household of Linus Edgerton was recorded in
the 1860 Federal Census of Pequannac, Morris County, New Jersey (pg. 762;
dwelling #724; family #790; enum. July 16, 1860), as follows:
The household of Linus Edgerton was recorded in the
1870 Federal Census of Boonton, Morris County, New Jersey (pg. 3; dwelling
#40; family #46; enum. July 8, 1870), as follows:
The household of Linus Edgerton was recorded in
the 1880 Federal Census of Boonton, Morris County, New Jersey (pg. 12;
dwelling #185; family #202; enum. June 10, 1880), as follows:
Mrs. Phebe A. Edgerton died at Boonton, New Jersey
on October 23, 1881. She left a Last Will and Testament, dated
April 16, 1870, which was proved at Morris County Surrogate Court in Morristown
on March 20, 1882, before Charles A. Gillen, Surrogate. The will itself was brief. Her only son, Edwin, presumably having
predeceased her, Phebe left her entire estate outright to her husband, Linus,
who was also appointed executor of the will.
The witnesses were John Grimes and Mary L. Hawkins (formerly Mary
Oliver). Phebe’s will was filed with
the Morris County Surrogate Court, Liber O, Folio #224. Following Phebe’s death, her half-sister, Anna B. Steventon
and Anna’s husband, Joseph Steventon, came to live with Linus at Boonton, New
Jersey. On March 25, 1882, Linus wrote
a Last Will and Testament,
leaving his entire estate to Anna, according to an agreement made between
them that Anna and Joseph would remain with him and care for him during the
remainder of his natural life. Linus Edgerton died at Boonton, New Jersey on
March 13, 1888 – as reported in the probate record of his estate. His will was proved one year later – on
March 30, 1889 – at Sussex County Surrogate Court in Morristown, before
Charles A. Gillen, Surrogate. Anna
Steventon, as executrix, gave testimony as did Newton S. Kitchel, one of the
two witnesses. Linus’ will was filed
with the Morris County Surrogate Court, Liber S, Folio #112. |
