Locy Bertrand Edgerton was born at Smithville, New York on December 4, 1823, the next-to-youngest son of Whiting and Huldah (Benton) Edgerton.  His name is found listed in some records as “Locey”, “Losey” and “Lacy”.

Locy Edgerton was married twice.  He married first, on February 11, 1849 in German, New York, Emily Thomas, daughter of Silas and Harriet (Baldwin) Thomas, of German.  Their marriage was reported in the 1850 Census Returns for German, Chenango County, New York.  According to the record, Locy was “aged 25, of Smithville”, and Emily was “aged 18, of German”.  Locy’s younger brother, George B., was married two years later to Emily’s sister, Nancy.  Both families resided in German Township.

Locy and Emily had two sons:  Louis B., born on March 11, 1850, who died at the age of 2 years, 7 months and 2 days; and Elwin S., born on August 19, 1853, who was married to Minnie I. Hough, and died in 1898, aged 45 years, leaving a young daughter, Marion Lillian.

The household of “Lacy B. Edgerton” was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of German, Chenango County, New York (pg. 207; dwelling #1661; family #1702; enum. Sept. 7, 1850), as follows:

Mrs. Emily (Thomas) Edgerton died at German, New York on February 18, 1857, “aged 26 years, 9 months, and 28 days”.  She was buried at West View Cemetery in German, where her son, Louis, had previously been interred.

Locy was remarried on September 1, 1858 in German, New York to Mrs. Sally Ann (Deul) Mersalis, a widow who was “formerly of Binghamton [New York]”.  A notice of their marriage was published in the Chenango American on September 9, 1858.  The identity of Sally’s first husband is not known, but she apparently had at least five children by her first marriage, as they are listed with Locy’s household in the 1860 Federal Census (see below).  It is very possible that Sally’s daughter, Flora A., born circa 1853, was probably the “Flora Marcellis” who later married Locy’s nephew, Chester Morris Edgerton.

Locy and Sally had two children:  Lillian M., born in April 1860, who married Frank Barnett; and Lewis E., who was born in February 1862 and later moved to Pennsylvania.

The household of “Lacy B. Edgerton” was recorded in the 1860 Federal Census of German, Chenango County, New York (pg. 478; dwelling #296; family #296; enum. June 27, 1860), as follows:
