Loren Edgerton was born at Randolph, Vermont on March 15, 1791, the son of William and Hannah (Blodgett) Edgerton.  The record of the family at Randolph (VR A:44), mistakenly lists him as a daughter.

Loren was raised in Randolph and was married there on February 5, 1824 to Laura Arnold, daughter of Henry and Silva (Cobb) Arnold, also of Randolph.  Laura was born in Randolph on November 26, 1795.  Her parents had come to Randolph from Hardwick, Worcester County, Massachusetts.

Loren and Laura (Arnold) Edgerton had two children: a daughter, Myra Frances, born in 1828 and a son, Henry Arnold, born in 1830.  Shortly after their marriage, Loren and Laura settled in the nearby village of Northfield, in Washington County, New York.

The household of Loren Edgerton was recorded in the 1830 Federal Census of Northfield, Washhington County, Vermont (pg. 312), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 30 and under 40”  (Loren);

1 male “under 5 years of age”  (son Henry);

1 female “of 30 and under 40”  (wife Laura);

1 female “of 15 and under 20”  (?); and,

1 female “under 5 years of age”  (daughter Myra).

Loren Edgerton died at Northfield, Vermont on February 19, 1832 and was buried at Mount Hope Cemetery in Northfield.  The following obituary notice was printed in the Vermont Chronicle on Friday, March 23, 1832:

“DEATHS…In Northfield, Loren Edgerton, 36 [sic].”

Loren’s widow, Laura, was not listed as a head of household in the 1840 Federal Census of Vermont – either in Washington County or Orange County.  It is probable that she and her two children were living at this time with one of her relatives – possibly her father, Henry Arnold.

At the time of the 1850 Federal Census, Mrs. Laura (Arnold) Edgerton and her daughter, Myra Frances, were recorded residing in the household of Laura’s father, Henry Arnold, in Randolph, Orange County, Vermont (pg. 234; dwelling #337; family #337; enum. Sept. 20, 1850).  The complete household was enumerated as follows:

Henry Arnold

81

b. MA

farmer     $1,200 real estate

Laura Egerton

54

b. VT

Frances

21

b. VT

Lucia Webster

34

b. VT

Mrs. Laura (Arnold) Edgerton died on August 3, 1852, “aged 56 years”, and was buried at the East Randolph Cemetery in Randolph, Vermont.

Loren and Laura’s two children were both married and removed from Vermont.  The daughter, Myra Frances, was married at Randolph on March 28, 1853 to Thomas Pember Russell and settled with him in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, dying shortly afterwards in 1855.  Henry Arnold Edgerton removed to Rock County, Wisconsin in the 1850’s.  He was married there in 1860 to Louise Battelle Foote of Goshen, Connecticut and had a family of three children.
