Lorenzo Edgerton, son of Roswell and Sarah (Selden) Edgerton.
Margaret Palmer, daughter of Ozias and Margaret (White) Palmer.
Children:
Lorenzo Edgerton was born May 14, 1799 at Rome,
New York. He was the third son and
fifth child of Roswell and Sarah (Selden) Edgerton. Lorenzo was raised in Rome, and resided there
for the greater part of his life. He
was a carpenter by profession. Lorenzo’s wife was Margaret (“Peggy”) Palmer, the
daughter of Ozias and Margaret (White) Palmer, also of Rome, New York. No record has yet been found of Lorenzo and
Margaret’s marriage, but it probably took place in Rome circa 1823-24. Margaret was born in New York State
(probably Rome) circa 1796. Lorenzo
and Margaret had three children: a
daughter, Harriet, who died in infancy; and two sons, Alonzo Jay and Alonson
Gifford. The family resided in Rome,
New York. The household of Lorenzo Edgerton was recorded in
the 1830 Federal Census
of Rome,
Oneida County, New York (pg. 399), with the following enumeration: 1 male “of 30 and under 40” (Lorenzo); 2 males “under 5 years of age” (sons Alonzo and Alonson); and, 1 female “of 30 and under 40” (wife Margaret). The household of Lorenzo Edgerton was recorded in
the 1840 Federal Census
of Rome,
Oneida County, New York (pg. 78), with the following enumeration: 1 male “40 and under 50” (Lorenzo); 2 males “10 and under 15” (son Alonzo and Alonson); and, 1 female “40 and under 50” (wife Margaret). The household of Lorenzo Edgerton was recorded in
the 1850 Federal Census
of Rome,
Oneida County, New York (pg. 5; dwelling #36; family #36; enum. July 25,
1850) as follows:
At the time of this census, Lorenzo’s younger son,
Alonson, was also residing nearby in Rome, and was enumerated two dwellings previously
on the census roll (dwelling #34; family #34). The elder son, Alonzo, was attending
college at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. In the latter 1850’s, Lorenzo and Margaret removed
west, along with the families of their two sons, to Mantorville, in Dodge
County, Minnesota. They resided in
Mantorville for the remainder of their lives. The household of “Lemuel
Edgerton” was recorded in the 1860 Federal Census of Mantorville Township, Dodge County,
Minnesota (dwelling #36; family #36; enum. June 8, 1860) as follows:
Mrs. Margaret (Palmer) Edgerton died at
Mantorville on September 5, 1868, “aged 72 years”. Lorenzo survived her and died a few years
later – on February 5, 1875, “aged 75 years”.
Both were buried at the Evergreen Cemetery in Mantorville, where their
elder son, Alonzo Jay Edgerton, and numerous descendants and in-laws were
later buried. Original
