Luther Edgerton was born in Norwich, Connecticut on March 31, 1775, the eldest son of Eliphalet and Eunice (Willet) Edgerton.  He was raised in Norwich and married there on January 21, 1798 Lydia Lord Waterman, the daughter of John and Mary (Lord) Waterman, also of Norwich.  Lydia was born in Norwich on November 26, 1778.

Luther and Lydia had a large family of eleven children – seven daughters and four sons.  The record of the family at Norwich (VRp II:616-617) includes the births of the first eight children.  The younger three children were presumably born in Marietta, Ohio, where the family settled circa 1814.

The household of Luther Edgerton was recorded in the 1800 Federal Census of New London County, Connecticut, as follows:

1 male “of 16 and under 26”  (Luther);

1 female “of 16 and under 26”  (wife Lydia); and,

2 females “under 10 years of age”  (daughters Mary Ann and Sarah).

Luther Edgerton was listed again as a head of household in the 1810 Federal Census of Norwich City, New London County, Connecticut (pg. 197).  At that time, his family was enumerated as follows:

1 male “of 26 and under 45”  (Luther);

2 males “under 10 years of age”  (sons Luther Jr. and John);

2 females “over 45 years of age”  (probably Luther’s mother, Eunice, and mother-in-law, Mary Lord);

1 female “of 26 and under 45”  (wife Lydia);

1 female “of 10 and under 16”  (daughter Mary Ann); and,

3 females “under 10 years of age”  (daughters Sarah, Eunice and Abby).

Luther Edgerton was a commander of Connecticut forces at New London during the War of 1812.  “Capt. Luther Edgerton” was noted as serving at New London, Connecticut under the command of Lt. Col. Furman Tracy for the period of June 1, 1813 to June 16, 1813.  (see Record of Service of Connecticut Men, Part II, War of 1812, pg. 48)

It was probably shortly after the War that Luther removed with his family to Marietta, Washington County, Ohio, where he resided for the remainder of his life.  He was first listed in the Federal Census of Marietta in the year 1820.  The household of Luther Edgerton was recorded in the 1820 Federal Census of Marietta, Washington County, Ohio (pg. 206), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 45 years and upwards”  (Luther);

2 males “of 10 and under 16”  (sons Luther Jr. and John);

2 males “under 10 years of age”  (sons Joseph and Charles);

1 female “of 45 years and upwards”  (mother Eunice);

1 female “of 26 and under 45”  (wife Lydia);

3 females “of 16 and under 26”  (daughters Mary Ann, Sarah and Eunice);

? female(s) “of 10 and under 16”  (daughter Abby); and,

4 females “under 10 years of age”  (daughters Lydia, Elizabeth and Susan, and ?)

The household of Mrs. Lydia Edgerton was recorded in the 1830 Federal Census of Marietta, Washington County, Ohio (pg. 379), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 20 and under 30”  (son John);

1 male “of 10 and under 15”  (son Charles);

1 female “of 80 and under 90”  (mother-in-law Eunice);

1 female “of 50 and under 60”  (Lydia);

1 female “of 15 and under 20”  (daughter Elizabeth); and,

1 female “of 5 and under 10”  (?)

Luther Edgerton died at Marietta, Ohio on September 13, 1823, aged 48.  His wife, Lydia, survived him many years; she died in Marietta, Ohio on January 30, 1849, aged 70.  They are both buried at the Mound Cemetery on Fifth Street in Marietta, Ohio.

Most of the vital statistics listed here pertaining to the family and descendants of Luther Edgerton are provided by the entries in his family Bible, which was transcribed into the Campus Martius Collection (Vol. I, no. 40) of the Ohio State University at Marietta.  This Bible was printed in Philadelphia, November 7, 1809, and contains the following description of its owner:

This Bible

Is the Property of

Luther Edgerton

of Norwich Conn.

who married Lydia Lord Waterman.

The entries in the Bible extend through five generations, including births, deaths and marriages within Luther and Lydia’s immediate family, as well the deaths of each of their parents, and the births of many of their grandchildren and great-children.
