Luther Edgerton Jr. was born at Norwich, Connecticut on October 1, 1804, the eldest son of Luther Edgerton and Lydia Lord Waterman.  When Luther was about ten years old, his family removed to Marietta, Washington County, Ohio.  Luther lived in Marietta for the majority of his adult life.  Census records (see below) indicate that he resided for a few years in Virginia – possibly in West Virginia which was still part of the state of Virginia at this time.  Luther’s four eldest children were reportedly born in the state of Virginia.

Circa 1828, Luther Edgerton went into mercantile business at Marietta with John Mills.  This partnership was dissolved in 1831 and it was presumably at this time that Luther removed to Virginia (see History of Marietta and Washington County, Ohio and Representative Citizens; Martin R. Andrew, comp.; Chicago, Illinois:  Biographical Publishing Company; 1902; pp. 259, 267).

In 1837, Luther Edgerton went into mercantile business once again at Marietta, opening a store at the corner of Market and Ohio Streets.  The following year he partnered with George M. Woodbridge, doing business under the name Edgerton & Woodbridge (see History of Marietta and Washington County, Ohio and Representative Citizens; pg. 265).

Luther Edgerton was married to Elizabeth McKennan Morgan, daughter of George and Elizabeth Aldrich (Thompson) Morgan and granddaughter of Colonel George Morgan of Revolutionary fame.  Elizabeth’s mother, Elizabeth Aldrich Thompson, was the daughter of Dr. David Thompson (and wife probably Elizabeth Dushane), of Delaware.  Dr. David Thompson was a physician of Red Lion Hundred, Delaware.  For reference on the family and ancestry of Mrs. Elizabeth McKennan (Morgan) Edgerton please see John Alexander Craig’s genealogy of this family, Colonel George Morgan – His Family and His Times (privately published by the author, 555 State Street, Hudson, N.Y., (212) 966-1233, [email protected]).

Luther and Elizabeth (Morgan) Edgerton had a family of eight children:  George Morgan, who married Mrs. Ann B. Leach; Lydia Waterman, who married Benjamin Perkins Putnam; David Morgan, who married Jane Harper Ford; John Mills, who married first Harriet A. Bartling, second Mary Hanlan and third Delorah Lou Ballard; Eliza Thompson, who married Reese Marshall Newport; William Henry, who married Matilda D. Israell; Luther, who died in the Civil War; and James Watson, who married Mary Hildreth Ross.  The family of the Luther Edgerton Jr. was entered in the family bible originally owned by his father, which was transribed into the Campus Martius Collection (Vol. I, no. 40) of the Ohio State University at Marietta (FG9).  The family record includes Luther and Elizabeth’s marriage date and complete birthdates for all but the youngest two children.

The household of Luther Edgerton was recorded in the 1840 Federal Census of Marietta, Washington County, Ohio (pg. 62), with the following enumeration:

1 male “30 & under 40”  (Luther);

1 male “5 & under 10”  (son George or David);

1 male “under 5” (son John);

2 females “30 & under 40”  (wife Elizabeth);

1 female “5 & under 10”  (daughter Lydia); and,

1 female “under 5”  (daughter Eliza).

Apparently one of the two elder sons (George or David) was residing out of the parental household at this time – possibly with relatives.

The household of Luther Edgerton was recorded in the 1870 Federal Census of Marietta (Ward 3), Washington County, Ohio (pg. 355; dwelling #194; family #213; enum. July 14, 1870).  They were enumerated as follows: 

The following obituary notice for Mrs. Elizabeth McKennan (Morgan) Edgerton was published in The Athens Messenger on Thursday, March 21, 1889:

“Mrs. Elizabeth Morgan Edgerton, wife of Luther Edgerton, of Marietta, died Wednesday of last week after a three month sickness.  She was 79 years old.”

Luther Edgerton died at Marietta, Ohio on December 30, 1891.  His death was entered in the Washington County Probate Book Record of Deaths (Vol. 2, #685).  According to the death record, Luther had died at Marietta, Ohio, aged 87 years, 3 months, 28 days.  Luther was buried on December 31, 1891 at Oak Grove Cemetery in Marietta.  Luther’s wife, Elizabeth McKennan Morgan, and several other children and descendants are also intered at Oak Grove Cemetery.
