Luther Nelson Edgerton was born at Hawley,
Massachusetts on May 9, 1829, the third son of Harvey and Hannah (Nelson)
Edgerton. He was no doubt named after
his maternal grandfather, Luther Nelson.
During his infancy, Luther’s parents removed from Massachusetts and
settled in North Royalton, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Luther resided in northeastern Ohio for the
remainder of his life – in North Royalton and Hinckley (Medina County). He made his living as a carpenter. Luther N. Edgerton was married at Cuyahoga County,
Ohio on May 8, 1847 to Permelia Ellsworth, daughter of Horace and Amanda
Ellsworth of Bristol, Vermont. Horace
and Permelia had one child – a daughter, Wealthy Amanda, born at North
Royalton on February 6, 1848. At the time of the 1850 Federal
Census, Luther Edgerton and his farmily were residing in the household of
his father-in-law, Horace Ellsworth, in Royalton Township, Cuyahoga County, Ohio
(pg. 156; dwelling #2841; family #3811; enum. September 11, 1850). They were enumerated as follows:
