Marcus C. Edgerton was born April 1825 at Barkhamsted, Connecticut, the fourth son and fifth child of Daniel Lee and Lucretia (Case) Edgerton.  His full name may have been Marcus Case Edgerton, after one of his uncles – Marcus Case, older brother of his mother, Lucretia.  Marcus was raised in Barkhamsted and Granby, Connecticut.  During his adult life, he resided throughout Litchfield and Hartford Counties in Connecticut (New Hartford, Canton, Bloomfield, Plainville, Granby) and also lived for a time in Hampden County, Massachusetts (Agawam and Southwick).

“Marcus Adjutant, wagonmaker, aged 23, b. Connecticut” was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of New Hartford, Litchfield County, Connecticut (pg. 125; dwelling #182; family #203; enum. October 12, 1850).  He was residing in the household of Abiano [?] Wilcox.

Marcus C. Edgerton was married three times.  His first wife was Antoinette Goddard, daughter of Truman and Betsey Hollister (Latimer) Goddard of Canton, Connecticut.  According to the 1850 Federal Census of Canton, Hartford County, Connecticut, Antoinette was born in Connecticut circa 1833.  No primary record of Marcus and Antoinette’s marriage has been found, however it probably took place circa 1852 – 1853 in Canton.  Marcus and Antoinette (Goddard) Edgerton had three children:  Frank, Alfred M. and Hattie Rosalia.  The births of the two sons were recorded in Canton, and the birth of the daughter, Hattie, was recorded at Bloomfield.  The younger two children both died young and were buried at the Canton Center Cemetery.  There is no further account of the elder son, Frank, beyond his enumeration in the 1860 Federal Census (see below).

Mrs. Antoinette (Goddard) Edgerton died of consumption at Simsbury, Connecticut on April 15, 1860.  The following obituary notice was printed in the The Hartford Courant on April 21, 1860:

“DEATHS… In Simsbury, April 15, of consumption Antoinette Edgerton, wife of Marcus C. Edgerton, and daughter of Truman Goddard, late deceased of Canton, AE 24.  [Massachusetts papers please copy.]”

There is no record of where Antoinette was buried.  She may have been buried beside her two children at the Canton Center Cemetery, although no stone is found for her there.

Marcus “Edgertone” and his son Frank were recorded in the 1860 Federal Census of Canton, Hartford County, Connecticut, residing in the household of his brother-in-law, Burton Goddard (pg. 470; dwelling #40; family #40; enum. August 3, 1860).  The household was enumerated as follows:

Edgerton”.  According to the record, she was aged 34 years and 6 months, a housekeeper, born in Canton, Connecticut.

Marcus Edgerton, of Canton, Connecticut, enlisted on December 9, 1861 for service in the Union Army.  He served as a private in L Company; 12th Connecticut Infantry Regiment.  The regiment fought in a handful of battles in Louisiana between February 1862 and January 1863.  Marcus was discharged January 6, 1863 on disability.  [see Connecticut: Record of Service of Men during War of Rebellion; Case, Lockwood & Brainard, 1889]

Marcus’ third wife was Mrs. Mary E. (Hayes) Levett, whom he married at Granby, Connecticut on May 19, 1867.  The record of their marriage (Granby VR 3:308) states that Marcus was aged 42, born in Barkhamsted, Connecticut; and that Mary was aged 31, born in Granby, Connecticut.  Sometime after his third marriage, Marcus removed for a time to Agawam (Feeding Hills), Massachusetts, where his elder brother, Anson Stiles Edgerton, had resided for many years.  Marcus and Mary (Hayes) Edgerton had three children – one son, Alfred Marcus, and two daughters, Cora Jeanette and Hattie.  The younger daughter died at the age of two years.
