Marshall Grove Edgerton was born December 14, 1810 at Moriah, New York, the eldest son of Jacob and Mary (Stoddard) Edgerton.  Details on his life are limited.  He was raised in Moriah.  Together with his father and siblings, Marshall removed from New York state in 1836.  He resided briefly in Unionville, Ohio and Brookfield, Wisconsin, before settling finally at Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois in the early 1840’s.

Marshall G. Edgerton’s was married circa 1836-37 to Hannah S. ----, a native of Vermont.  According to census records, Hannah was born circa 1820, but to date neither her surname nor parentage have been established.  Marshall and Hannah are known to have had at least two children:  a daughter, Helen M., and a son, George.  The 1855 Illinois State Census enumeration of Marshall’s household (see below) indicates that there was probably another daughter born circa 1850 – 1855.

When the 1840 Federal Census was taken, Marshall G. Edgerton was recorded as a head of household in Brookfield, Waukesha County, Wisconsin (pg. 385).  He was listed as “M. G. Edgerton” and the enumeration of his household was as follows:

2 males “of 20 and under 30”  (Marshall and ?);

1 female “of 60 and under 70”  (?);

1 female “of 20 and under 30”  (wife Hannah); and,

1 female “under 5”  (daughter Helen)

Marshall G. Edgerton was one of the “Jayhawkers” from Galesburg, Illinois who departed on April 5, 1849 for the California gold fields.  His cousin, Sidney P. Edgerton, was also a member of the party.  According to Lorenzo Dow Stephens’ account of the Jayhawkers (Life Sketches of a Jayhawker of ’49; San Jose, California: Nolta Brothers, 1916), Marshall died in the year 1865 in the Montana Territory.  Accounts of other Jayhawkers report the year of his death as 1855, which seems more probable in light of later census records.

When the 1850 Federal Census was taken, Marshall’s wife, “Hannah Edgerton”, was recorded as the head of household in Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois (dwelling #607; family #613; enum. September 23, 1850).  The enumeration of the family was as follows:

Hannah Edgerton

30

b. VT

Hellen

12

b. OH

Georg

10

b. WI

Marshall G. Edgerton was recorded as a head of household in the 1855 Illinois State Census of Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois.  The enumeration of his household was as follows:

2 males “40 to 50”  (Marshall);

1 male “10 to 20”  (son George);

1 female “30 to 40”  (wife Hannah);

1 female “10 to 20”  (daughter Helen); and,

1 female “under 10”  (daughter ?).

By 1860, Mrs. Hannah Edgerton had removed – probably with her two children – to Chicago, Illinois.  The daughter, Helen M., was married at Chicago on April 18, 1858 to Nelson K. Farnham.  Mrs. Hannah Edgerton was presumably the “Hannah Agerton, aged 40, nurse, b. Vermont” who was listed as a head of household in the 1860 Federal Census of Chicago (Ward 1), Cook County, Illinois (dwelling #1170; family #1018; enum. July 24, 1860).

Mrs. Hannah Edgerton later became matron of the Ohio Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Orphans’ Home in Xenia, Ohio.  She was enumerated there in the 1870 Federal Census (Xenia, Greene County, Ohio; pg. 324; dwelling #1; family #1; enum. June 17, 1870) as “Hannah Edgerton, aged 50, b. Vermont, matron, $1,500 personal estate”.

Mrs Hannah Edgerton was recorded as a head of household in the 1880 Federal Census of Delaware City (Ward 4), Delaware County, Ohio (pg. 523; dwelling #34; family #40; enum. June 9, 1880).  She was enumerated as, “Anna S. Edgerton, aged 60, widow, b. in Vermont, father b. in Connecticut, mother b. in Vermont”.  Her occupation was listed as “keeps house”.

Mrs. Hannah S. Edgerton died at Cincinatti, Ohio on March 28, 1884.  According to the Hamilton County death record (Vol. I, pg. 66), she was a widow, aged 65 years.  He residence was given as 177 ½ Elm.
