Martin Van Buren Edgerton was born at Wallingford, Vermont on September 10, 1834, the eldest son of Crispin Bull and Lucretia Smead (Allen) Edgerton.  He spent his entire lifetime in Rutland County, Vermont – residing variously in Danby and Wallingford.  He made his living as a carpenter.

At the time of the 1860 Federal Census, Martin Edgerton was residing in Danby, Rutland County, Vermont in the household of Josiah Southwick (dwelling #80; family #73; enum. June 1, 1860).  He was enumerated as “Martin Edgerton, aged 26, laborer”.

At the time of 1870 Federal Census, Martin Edgerton was residing in Danby, Rutland County, Vermont in the household of Albert T. Colvin (dwelling #52; family #51; enum, August 9, 1870).  He was enumerated as “Martin Edgerton, aged 35, carpenter, born in Vermont, $1,000 personal estate”.

Martin V. Edgerton was married at Danby, Vermont on August 31, 1870 to Mrs. Eliza Ann (Davis) Lilley, daughter of Ira and Amanda (Ridlon) Davis and widow of William Ward Lilley.  Eliza had two children by her first marriage:  a son, William Ward Lilley Jr. and a daughter Mabel J.  According to the marriage entry in the Danby Vital Records (Book II, pg. 3, #8), Martin was aged 35, a mechanic, born at Wallingford, Vt, the son of Crispin & Lucretia Edgerton; and  Eliza was aged 23, born at Clarendon, Vt, the daughter of Jesse [sic] & Amanda Davis.  It was also noted that this was Eliza’s second marriage.  Martin and Eliza were divorced within a few years of their marriage.  Eliza was later remarried to Frank Davis.  She died at Simonsville, Vermont on June 29, 1943 at the age of 92.

The household of 1900 Federal Census was recorded in the 1900 Federal Census of Wallingford, Rutland County, Vermont (pg. 188; dwelling #64; family #66; enum. June 4, 1900), as follows:

Both Martin and Andrus were listed as “carpenters”.  The enumerater seems to have reversed Andrus’ birthdate and age – he was actually born in 1843 and was 56 years old.
