The following biography of
Sidney Durston is excerpted from Historical
Encyclopedia of Illinois and History of Mercer County (William A. Lorimer,
ed.; Chicago, Ill.: Munsell Publishing Company; 1903; pp. 768-769): “SIDNEY DURSTON, farmer, Rivoli Twp, born in Rivoli township Sept 14, 1841, son of James and Philadelphia (Bridger) Durston began farming for himself in 1866. Aug 9, 1862 enlisted as a private in CO D Eighty-third Illinois Voluntary Infantry, participated in the second battle at Fort Donnelson, and was discharged July 4, 1865. Politically a Republican and has filled various local offices; elected Supervisor of Rivoli township in 1901, and for many years has served on the school board; and active member and trustee of the Wesleyan Methodist Church. Sept 18, 1866 he married Mary L Edgerton, a native of Galesburg, Illinois and a daughter of Solomon Everest Edgerton, who came from New York state to Galesburg in 1836 and lived in Knox and Henry counties for many years. They now reside in Woodhull. Mr. and Mrs. Durston have no children of their own, but in 1872 they adopted Charles A Vennerburg (a child of 8 years of age) and in 1880 Harry M and Herbert Piper (twins, age 4 years) all of whom remained with them until they attained majority. Harry M legally assumed the name Durston.” |
