Olcott Edgerton was born
September 5, 1836 at Vernon, Connecticut, the son
of Edwin and Celia Ann (Warren)
Edgerton. He had a twin brother,
Talcott.
Olcott Edgerton was raised
in Vernon, Connecticut. At the time of the 1850 Federal Census of
Vernon, he was enumerated in the household of his father, Edwin, as well in
the neighboring household of “Geo. Rupert”.
In the latter enumeration (dwelling #10; family #11), he was listed as
“Olcott Edgerton, aged 14, b. Connecticut.”
Olcott’s parent’s were
divorced in 1857 and his mother was subsequently remarried to John C. Benton
and removed with him and her younger children to Monson, Massachusetts. It was presumably at this time that Olcott
also left his homestate and settled in Worcester
County, Massachusetts.
Olcott was married at Webster, Massachusetts
on March 15, 1860 to Harriet M. Brown, daughter of Willard and Sarah
(Emerson) Brown of Webster. Following
their marriage, Olcott and Harriet resided briefly in Webster but soon after
settled in Worcester
City, where they
resided for the majority of their lives.
They had one son, Charles Henry, born at Webster on January 20, 1869.
At the time of the 1860 Federal Census,
Olcott Edgerton and his wife, Harriet, were residing in Stafford, Tolland County, Connecticut
in the household of Lemuel and Abigail Dunlap. (pg. 748; dwelling #162;
family #188; enum. June 12, 1860) They
were enumerated as follows:

In the summer of 1863,
Olcott Edgerton, “mechanic, aged 26”, enlisted for service in the Union Army
during the Civil War. He was mustered
in on July 17, 1863 (just after the battle of Gettysburg) as a private in the H Company,
32nd Massachusetts Infantry Regiment.
The Regiment was active in battles throughout Virginia (Petersburgh,
Weldon Railroad, Hatcher’s Run, etc) from October 1863 to April 1865. Olcott Edgerton was mustered out on June
29, 1865 (see Massachusetts
Soldiers, Sailors and Marines in the Civil War). Olcott later applied for a Civil War
Invalid Pension on February 18, 1891, citing his service in the 32nd
Massachusetts Infantry, Company H. His
widow, “Harriette M. Edgerton” applied for a Widow’s Pension on May 7, 1917
(see National Archives Pension Applications; Application #995795, Certificate
#786941; and Application #1100433, Certificate #828589).

publishers) with an address at “149 Green” and residence at “10 Madison”; his
occupation was listed as “watchman”.
In the 1890 Directory of Worcester (Drew, Allis & Co. publishers)
he was listed with an address at “91 Foster” and residence at “10 Madison”; his
occupation was listed as “overseer”.
