Oliver Edgerton was born at Charlemont, Massachusetts on July 25, 1795, the eldest child of of Joseph and Candace (Rice) Edgerton.  He was raised in Charlemont and removed with his parents to Brecksville, Ohio circa 1815.  Oliver resided in Brecksville for the entirety of his adult life.  He made his living as a farmer.  He was frequently referred to in records as “Oliver Edgerton 2nd” so as to distinguish him from his uncle of the same name.

 

Oliver Edgerton was married at Brecksville, Ohio on November 15, 1835 to Laura Stockwell, daughter of William and Lucy (Miller) Stockwell of Northampton, Massachusetts.  Laura was born at Northampton on March 23, 1802.  Oliver and Laura did not have any children; although they apparently took several foster children under their roof, as evidenced by the various census enumerations of their household (see below).

 

The household of Oliver Edgerton was recorded in the the 1840 Federal Census of Brecksville, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, with the following enumeration:

 

1 male “40 and under 60”  (Oliver);

1 female “30 and under 40”  (wife Laura); and,

1 female “5 and under 10”  (?).

Mrs. Laura (Stockwell) Edgerton died at Brecksville, Ohio in the year 1861, and was buried at the Rice Cemetery (aka. Barr Cemetery) in Brecksville Township.  Oliver was subsequently remarried on October 16, 1865 at Cuyahoga County, Ohio to Mary Coates.

Oliver Edgerton died at Brecksville, Ohio on November 28, 1872, aged 77 years.  His death was registered in the Cuyahoga County Probate Court Record of Deaths, 1869 – 1890 (Volume 1, page 100).  The entry provides the following particulars:

Oliver was buried next to his first wife, Laura, at Rice Cemetery in Brecksville Township.  The Cleveland Public Library Necrology Files provide the following entry for Oliver Edgerton (ID #: 0087645):
