Oliver Edgerton was born in Coventry, Connecticut in May of 1815, the son of Hezekiah Edgerton III and his second wife, Sina Richardson.  No primary record of Oliver’s birth has been located.  The month and year cited here are derived from the age at death reported in his death record (Coventry VR 6:454-5).  Oliver was raised in Coventry and resided there his entire life.  He made his living as a farmer, butcher and laborer.

Oliver Edgerton was married to Miss Lucy Brown in March of 1838.  A notice of their marriage was published in the Christian Secretary newspaper on March 23, 1838.  Lucy’s parentage is not yet known.  According to the age reported in her death record (Coventry VR 6:474-5), she was born October 9, 1814 in Mansfield, Connecticut.  Lucy may have been related to John B. Brown, who married Oliver’s cousin, Jane Edgerton.  John and Jane were later witnesses to Lucy’s will.

Oliver and Lucy Edgerton had four sons – Daniel W., Joseph Grant, Carlos H. and Frank Wesley.  The sons were all presumably born in Coventry, although no records of the family are found in the Coventry Vital Records.  The death records of the two elder sons – Daniel and Joseph – confirm that they were born in Coventry.

The household of Oliver Edgerton was recorded in the 1840 Federal Census of Coventry, Tolland County, Connecticut (pg. 96), with the following enumeration:
