Oliver Porter Edgerton was born in Coventry, Connecticut on June 25, 1830, the youngest son of Gurdon and Cynthia (Porter) Edgerton.  He was baptized later that year at the Second Congregational Church of Coventry (North Parish) – the baptismal records indicates only that “Oliver Porter, son of Gurdon Edgerton” was baptized in 1830.

Circa 1834, Oliver’s parents removed from Coventry to Annsville, Oneida County, New York, where the family resided for a few years.  The family also resided briefy in Monroe County, New York, where Oliver’s mother, Cynthia, died in 1840.  Following Cynthia’s death, the family returned to Coventry, Connecticut.

“Oliver P. Edgerton” was admitted the the Second Church of Coventry (North Parish) on June 4, 1852, and dismissed in March of the following year “to Plainville”. (ChR 6:26)

Oliver Porter Edgerton was married in Vernon, Connecticut on April 23, 1854 to Miss Julia Wright Kellogg, the daughter of Aaron and Hannah (Wright) Kellogg of Rome, New York.  Julia was born in Rome on June 25, 1832; and, coincidentally, she had the same birthday as her husband.  Oliver and Julia had four children – three sons, Charles Kellogg, Henry Gurdon, and Frank Oliver, and one daughter, Julia Cynthia.  They resided first in Vernon and Rockville (Tolland Co.), Connecticut, where the eldest three children were born.  The second child, Henry, died in infancy and was buried at Elmwood Cemetery, in Vernon.

The household of “O. P.” Edgerton was recorded in the 1860 Federal Census of Vernon, Tolland County, Connecticut (pg. 512; dwelling #354; family #498; enum. June 21, 1860), as follows:

Circa 1861, Oliver and Julia removed from Vernon to Conway, Franklin County, Massachusetts, where Oliver’s elder brother, Gurdon had previously settled.  Oliver’s youngest son, Frank Oliver, was born in Conway on July 31, 1862.

Oliver Edgerton (“a merchant of Conway, Mass., aged 32”) enlisted on October 1, 1862, as a private in D Company of the 52nd Infantry Regiment of Massachusetts.  He was promoted to Full 1st Sergeant at enlistment, and later to Full 2nd Lieutenant on November 8, 1862.  The 52nd Regiment was active in a number of battles at Port Hudson and Jackson, Louisiana between June 14 and July 6 of 1863.  Oliver was mustered out at Camp Miller, Greenfield, Massachusetts on August 14, 1863.

After the Civil War, Oliver and Julia settled in Brooklyn, New York where they resided for the remainder of their lives.  “Oliver P. Edgerton, broker” was listed in the 1888-89 and 1889-90 Directories of Brooklyn, New York (Lain & Co., publishers).  The entries for both years record his address as: “439 Greene Ave.   In the 1888-89 Directory, his younger son “Frank O. Edgerton, clerk” was listed at the same address; and in the 1888-89 Directory, his eldest son, “Charles K. Edgerton, clerk”. was listed at “418 Tompkins avenue”.  In the 1889-90 Directory, “Charles K. Edgerton, merchant” was listed with two addresses:  “512 Broadway N. Y.” and “418 Tompkins avenue”.

According to The Kelloggs in the Old World and the New (Hopkins, Timothy; Sunset Press and Photo Engraving Co., San Francisco, California; 1903; Vol. II, p.1397), Oliver P. Edgerton “was a broker; res. in Brooklyn; was a Lieut. in the Fifty-second Reg., Massachusetts Volunteers, in the civil war; was a Congregationalist; an Independent Republican.”

Oliver Porter Edgerton died in Brooklyn, New York on November 10, 1899.  His widow, Julia, survived him a number of years and later applied for a Civil War widow’s pension on June 26, 1908.  The application was filed from New York State and cited Oliver’s service in the 52nd Massachusetts Infantry (Co. D).  (see National Archives Pension Applications; Application #898962, Certificate #670595)

The household of Mrs. Julia W. Edgerton was recorded in the 1900 Federal Census of Brooklyn Borough (Ward 23), Kings County, New York (pg. 252; dwelling #60; family #74; enum. June 4, 1900), as follows:
