Philip Edgerton Jr. was born in Wallingford, Vermont on February 4, 1807, the fourth son of Philip and Mary (Hall) Edgerton.  Philip’s mother, Mary, died the day after he was born, most likely due to complications from childbirth.  Philip’s father was remarried later that year to Narcissa Osborne.

Philip was raised in Wallingford and married there, on October 22, 1829, Mary Ann Munson, daughter of Isaac and Sarah (Bradley) Munson of Wallingford, formerly New Haven, Connecticut.  Mary Ann was born at New Haven on July 11, 1804.  The marriage of Philip Edgerton and Mary Ann Munson was recorded in the Miscellaneous Town Records of Wallingford (Book M2, page 2) and an announcement of the marriage was published in the Vermont Chronicle on Friday, November 6, 1829.

Philip and Mary Ann resided briefly in Wallingford.  In the mid-1830’s, Philip removed to Chautauqua County, New York, where his father and brothers had settled about a decade earlier.  Philip resided in Sinclairsville, in Ellery Township.

Philip and Mary Ann (Munson) Edgerton had six children – two sons and four daughters.  The two eldest children – Lucius and Sarah, died in infancy; the former (Lucius) was buried at Green Hill Cemetery in Wallingford, Vermont, and the latter (Sarah) at Evergreen Cemetery in Sinclairsville, New York.

The 1835 New York State Census of Ellery, Chautauqua County, New York recorded the following statistics for the household of “Philip Edgerton Jr.” (so listed in order to distinguish him from his father, who was also listed as a head of household in this census):

2  (ie. Mary Ann and Sarah)

The fact that Philip was listed here with no property indicates that he may have been living on his father’s land, perhaps in a separate dwelling on the farm.  Philip’s elder brother, Hiram, was also listed in the 1835 Census residing in Ellery Township.

The household of Philip Edgerton was recorded in the 1840 Federal Census of Charlotte, Chautauqua County, New York (pg. 284), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 30 and under 40”  (Philip);

1 male “of 15 and under 20”  (?);

1 female “of 30 and under 40”  (wife Mary Ann); and,

2 females “under 5 years of age”  (daughters Ann and Emma).

By 1845, Philip had returned to Rutland County, Vermont and settled in the town of Clarendon, just north of his hometown.  Philip’s father and most of his brothers also left Chautauqua County about this time, moving on to eastern Ohio.  Philip’s youngest daughter, Mary Frances, was born in Clarendon on April 21, 1846.
