Plinny Edgerton was born at Bennington, Vermont in the year 1796, the son of Uriah and Anna (Smith) Edgerton.  He was raised in Bennington and resided there his entire life – in the northern district of town known as Hinsdillville.  His first name was written variously as “Plinny”, “Pliny”, “Pliney” and “Plenny”.  The latter is found on his gravestone.

Plinny Edgerton was married to Nancy Haynes of Wilmington, Vermont.  According to her gravestone and death record (Bennington VR 3:47), Nancy was born in Wilmington in the year 1795; her parentage has not yet been determined.

Plinny and Nancy (Haynes) Edgerton had a family of three children:  two daughters, Ann S., who died at the age of 18 years, and Jane H., who died unmarried in 1901; and one son, George Linus, who resided for a time in New Lots, Kings County, New York.  George was married and had one son, Charles H.

The household of “Pliney” Edgerton was recorded in the 1830 Federal Census of Bennington, Bennington County, Vermont (pg. 42), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 30 and under 40”  (Plinny);

1 female “of 30 and under 40”  (wife Nancy); and,

1 female “of 5 and under 10”  (daughter Ann).

The household of “Pliny” Edgerton was recorded in the 1840 Federal Census of Bennington, Bennington County, Vermont (pg. 257), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 30 and under 40”  (Plinny – actually aged 44);

1 male “of 5 and under 10”  (son George – actually aged 4);

1 female “of 30 and under 40”  (Nancy – actually aged 45); and,

1 female “of 5 and under 10”  (daughter Jane).

Plinny Edgerton died on September 29, 1855, presumably at Bennington, Vermont.  He was buried at the Hinsdillville Cemetery in North Bennington, where his gravestone was inscribed:  “PLENNY EDGERTON / DIED / Sep. 29, 1855 / AE 59 Yrs”.  His daughter, Ann S. Edgerton, had previously been buried in the same plot; her headstone was inscribed:  “ANN S. EDGERTON / daughter of / PLENNY & NANCY / EDGERTON died / June 9, 1839 / in the 18th year / of her age”.

Mrs. Nancy (Haynes) Edgerton survived her husband over twenty-four years.  She was recorded in the 1860 Federal Census of Bennington, Bennington County, Vermont (pg. 675; dwelling #230; family #240; enum. July 16, 1860), as:  “Nancy Edgerton, aged 60, born in Vermont”.  She was residing at the time in the same dwelling as Christopher and Bridget Flood.

The household of Mrs. Nancy Edgerton was recorded in the 1870 Federal Census of Bennington, Bennington County, Vermont (pg 344; dwelling #81; family #81; enum. June 23, 1870), as follows:

At the time of this census, the family was residing on “County Road”.  The grandson listed here – Charles H. – was the son of Nancy’s only son, George Linus Edgerton.  The whereabouts of George and his wife, Emma, at the time of this census is not known.  George died at Bennington two years later (in August 1882 – VR 3:51); he was buried beside his parents in the family plot at Hinsdillville Cemetery.

Mrs. Nancy (Haynes) Edgerton died at Bennington, Vermont on January 27, 1881.  According to the record of her death (Bennington VR 3:47), she was a widow, aged 86 years, and had been born at Wilmington, Vermont.  Nancy was buried beside her husband and children at Hinsdillville Cemetery.  Her gravestone there was inscribed:  “NANCY HAYNES / Wife of / PLENNY EDGERTON / 1795 – 1881 / AE 85 Yrs”.  Plinny and Nancy’s younger daughter, Jane, was later buried beside her parents in the family plot.
