Ralph Haskell Edgerton was born August 6, 1821 at Moriah, New York, the son of Ebenezer Leffingwell and Edna Amanda (Harris) Edgerton.  His mother died when Ralph was eight years old and Ralph settled in the city of Rochester (Monroe County) at a young age.  His elder brothers, Urban and Jerome, also resided in Rochester at this time and it appears that the majority of the Edgerton siblings removed to Rochester following their mother’s death.

Ralph H. Edgerton was married in 1846 to Octavia Cordelia Penhollow, of Chautauqua County, New York.  Octavia was a granddaughter of Richard Penhollow (~1746 – 1817), who fought in the American Revolution.  Richard was born in Boston, Massachusetts and died at Norwich, Connecticut; at least three of his sons – Reuben, Nathan and Hiram – settled in Chautauqua County, New York.  To date, it has not yet been determined which of Richard’s sons was Octavia’s father.  For further information on the Penhollow Family, visit Penhallow.net which contains a genealogy of the Penhollow/Penhallow family written by Mrs. Octavia Cordelia (Penhollow) Edgerton in 1914.

Ralph H. and Octavia (Penhollow) Edgerton had two children:  one son, Hiram Haskell, born at Belfast, New York on April 19, 1847 (married Medora Lydia Dewitt); and one daughter, Jane Ann Isabel, born at Rochester, New York on June 12, 1850 (unmarried).

The Encyclopedia of Biography of New York (Charles Elliott Fitch; The American Historical Society; New York, 1816; pp. 106-107) provides the following biographical excerpt regarding Ralph Haskell Edgerton:

“Ralph H. Edgerton, born at Port Henry, on Lake Champlain, in 1821, was but fourteen years of age when he first located in Rochester, then a small but thriving town.  He continued his residence in Rochester, with the exception of a few years, until his death in 1867, building up and conducting an extensive lumber business.”

The household of Ralph H. Edgerton was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of Canaeden, Allegany County, New York (pg. 186; dwelling #56; family #60; enum. September 18, 1850), as follows:
