Children:
Reed Edgerton was born at Pawlet, Vermont on December 9, 1789, the eldest son of Jacob Edgerton and his first wife, Esther Reed. He was raised in Pawlet and resided there for the entirety of his adult life. Reed Edgerton was married twice. His first wife was Betsey Lyon, daughter of John and Sarah (Lockwood) Lyon, natives of Fairfield County, Connecticut. Reed and Bestey were probably married circa 1813, given the birth of their first child in December of 1814. Reed and Betsey (Lyon) had four children – all sons: an infant who died February 16, 1815, aged 2 months; Marson, born May 18, 1816; Chester, born August 19, 1819; and Henry, born in 1821. All of the children were presumably born at Pawlet, although none of the births were entered in the Vital Records there. The household of Reed Edgerton was recorded in the 1820 Federal Census of Pawlet, Rutland County, Vermont (pg. 243), with the following enumeration: 1 male “of 26 and under 45” (Reed); 1 male “of 16 and under 26” (?); 1 male “between 16 and 18” (?); 2 males “under 10 years of age” (sons Marson and Chester); and, 1 female “of 26 and under 45” (wife Betsey). Mrs. Betsey (Lyon) Edgerton died at Pawlet, Vermont on April 12, 1821, aged 28 years. It has been speculated that she died in childbirth of her youngest son, Henry (born in 1821), although documentary proof of this has not been found. Betsey was buried at the Old Pawlet Cemetery, where her gravestone bears the following inscription: In memory of Mrs. Betsey Consort of Mr. Reed Edgerton who departed this life April 12th 1821 AE. 28 leaving a husband & 3 children to lament her loss. ------------- This is the word of God: by death That all who live must yield their breath Then be prepared when e’er he comes That you may have a heavenly home. Reed Edgerton married second, on February 24, 1822 in Pawlet, Harriet Griswold, daughter of Rev. John and Elizabeth (Lay) Griswold. Harriet was born in Pawlet on February 2, 1795. Reed had two more children by his second wife – a daughter, Betsey M., and a son, Gilbert Griswold. Reed Edgerton made his living as a merchant. He was also a member of the First Congregational Church of Pawlet, of which his father-in-law, John Griswold, was pastor. Hiel Hollister’s Pawlet for One Hundred Years (Albany, New York: J. Munsell; 1867; pg. 186) gives the following biographical entry for Reed Edgerton: “EDGERTON, REED, m. ---- Lyon, and settled in the mercantile business at the village. His wife died in 1821, leaving three sons: Marson, Chester, and Henry. He next m. Harriet, da. of Rev. John Griswold; he died in 1829, aged 40. Marson m. Betsey, da. of Capt. Milton Brown, who died in 1847, aged 28; he next m. Lucy, da. of Silas Gregory, who died in 1861, aged 32. He was agent of the cotton factory several years, and is now a tea merchant in New York city. Chester removed to Fremont, Ohio, is an attorney and has been mayor of that city.” Reed Edgerton died at Pawlet, Vermont on August 17, 1829 at the age of forty years. His death was recorded in the Pawlet vital records (I:111), as well as in the records of the First Congregational Church of Pawlet, where it was noted under “Account of Deaths…Aug. 16th [sic], 1829 Mr. Reed Edgerton. A acceptable citizen.” Reed was buried beside his first at the Old Pawlet Cemetery. His gravestone there was inscribed with the following epitaph: In memory of REED EDGERTON who died August 17, 1829 in the 40 year of his age. Leaving a wife & 5 children under his admonition. Be ye also ready. The household of “Widow H. Edgerton” (that is Mrs. Harriet (Griswold) Edgerton) was recorded in the 1830 Federal Census of Pawlet, Rutland County, Vermont (pg. 95), with the following enumeration: 1 male “of 20 and under 30” (?); 1 male “of 5 and under 10” (stepson Chester); 1 male “under 5 years of age” (son Gilbert); 1 female “of 30 and under 40” (Harriet); and, 1 female “of 5 and under 10” (daughter Betsey). The household of Mrs. Harriet Edgerton was recorded in the 1840 Federal Census of Pawlet, Rutland County, Vermont (pg. 107), with the following enumeration: 1 male “20 and under 30” (stepson Chester); 2 males “15 and under 20” (stepson Henry and ?); 1 male “10 and under 15” (son Gilbert); 1 female “40 and under 50” (Harriet); and, 1 female “15 and under 20” (daughter Betsey). Reed’s widow, Harriet, was remarried at Pawlet, Vermont on October 4, 1842 to Ezra Williams. In 1844, Harriet and her second husband removed from Pawlet to Fremont, Sandusky County, Ohio, along with her children and her stepson, Chester. Ezra Williams died at Fremont, Ohio just a few years after the move – on March 14, 1847. The household of Mrs. Harriet (Griswold) Edgerton Williams was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of Fremont, Sandusky County, Ohio (pg. 404; dwelling #156; family #162; enum. July 18, 1850), as follows:
Harriet was married a third time on October 29, 1851 at Fremont, Ohio to Dr. Gilbert Churchill, who was also a native of Pawlet, Vermont. Following her third marriage, Harriet went to live with her husband at Bergen, Genesee County, New York. Her daughter, Mrs. Betsey M. (Edgerton) Hall, also resided in Bergen at this time. Mrs. Harriet (Griswold) Edgerton Williams Churchill died at Bergen, New York on June 13, 1867. An obituary notice was published in the Fremont Weekly Journal on June 21, 1867. Harriet was buried at the East Bergen Cemetery in Bergen, New York with her third husband. Original Source Documents: Marriage record
