Reuben Edgerton I was born at Norwich, Connecticut on May 29, 1779, the eldest son of Zebulon and Abigail (Palmer) Edgerton.  He was raised in the northwest district of Norwich, which was incorporated as the separate township of Franklin in 1786.  Reuben made his living as a farmer.

Shortly after the turn of the century, Reuben Edgerton removed to New York State (together with his father and siblings) and settled in Pompey Township, Onondaga County.  The Edgerton families settled in the southeastern portion of the township known as Delphi Falls.  Reuben Edgerton resided in Pompey for the remainder of his life.

Reuben was married on October 20, 1811 at Pompey to Rebecca Galloway, daughter of Thomas and Esther Galloway, natives of New Jersey.  According to her gravestone, Rebecca was born on January 3, 1785, presumably in the state of New Jersey as reported in the 1850 Federal Census (see below).  Reuben and Rebecca (Galloway) Edgerton are known to have had six children (all born at Pompey):  Julia Ann, Reuben II, John, Marvin, James Monroe and George K.

In 1828, Reuben and his wife joined with the First Baptist of Pompey and were baptized there – Rebecca on March 30, 1828 and Reuben in June of 1828.  Their two elder children were later baptized at the church – Julia Ann in 1831 and Reuben Jr. in 1832.

The household of Reuben Edgerton was recorded in the 1820 Federal Census of Pompey, Onondaga County, New York (pg. 71), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 26 and under 45”  (Reuben);

3 males “under 10 years of age”  (sons Reuben, John and Marvin);

1 female “of 26 and under 45”  (wife Rebecca);

1 female “of 10 and under 16”  (?); and,

1 female “under 10 years of age”  (daughter Julia).

The household of Reuben Edgerton was recorded in the 1830 Federal Census of Pompey, Onondaga County, New York (pg. 271), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 50 and under 60”  (Reuben);

2 males “of 10 and under 15”  (sons Reuben Jr. and John);

3 males “of 5 and under 10”  (sons Marvin, James and George);

1 female “of 90 and 100”  (?);

1 female “of 40 and under 50”  (wife Rebecca); and,

1 female “of 15 and under 20”  (daughter Julia).

The household of Reuben Edgerton was recorded in the 1840 Federal Census  of Pompey, Onondaga County, New York (pg. 174), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 60 and under 70”  (Reuben);

1 male “of 50 and under 60”  (?);

2 males “of 20 and under 30”  (2 of the 3 elder sons – Reuben, John and Marvin);

2 males “of 15 and under 20”  (sons James and George);

1 female “of 50 and under 60”  (wife Rebecca);

1 female “of 20 and under 30”  (daughter Julia); and,

1 female “of 5 and under 10”  (? – possibly the Julia A. Marks enumerated with the family in the 1850 Federal Census).

The household of Reuben Edgerton was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of Pompey, Onondaga County, New York (pg. 81; dwelling #1258; family #1292; enum. Aug. 31, 1850), as follows:
