Roswell Edgerton, son of Nathan and Lucy (Smith) Edgerton.

born:

September 7, 1775; Norwich, New London Co., CT.  (VRp I:515)

Roswell Edgerton was born on September 7, 1775 at Norwich, Connecticut.  He was the youngest son of Nathan Edgerton Sr. and Lucy Smith.  Roswell was raised in Franklin, Connecticut (then part of Norwich).  About the turn of the century, he removed along with his father, Nathan, to Franklin, New York, where his two elder brothers, Roger and Nathan Jr., had previously settled.  Roswell presumbably resided in Franklin, New York for the remainder of his life.  There is no record that he was ever married.

For much of his adult life, Roswell apparently resided with his parents.  He was recorded in his father’s household in the Federal Censuses of 1790, 1800 and 1810; and in 1820 he was included in the household of his widowed mother, Lucy.  Roswell himself was listed as a head of household only twice – in the 1830 and 1840 Federal Censuses of Franklin, Delaware County, New York.

The household of Roswell Edgerton was recorded in the 1830 Federal Census of Franklin, Delaware County, New York (pg. 68), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 50 and under 60”  (Roswell); and,

1 female “of 60 and under 70”  (? – probably an unmarried sister).

The household of Roswell Edgerton was recorded in the 1840 Federal Census of Franklin, Delaware County, New York (pg. 440), with the following enumeration:

1 male “60 and under 70”  (Roswell); and,

1 female “70 and under 80”  (? – probably an unmarried sister).

At the time of the 1850 Federal Census, Roswell was recorded in the household of his nephew, John Edgerton, in Franklin, Delaware County, New York (pg. 61; dwelling #36; family #39; enum. July 19, 1850).  He was enumerated as “Roswell Edgerton, aged 76, born in Connecticut”.

There is no record of the death of Roswell Edgerton.  He was probably buried in the family plot at the Old Congregational Church Cemetery in Franklin Village.  One of the small footstones there bears the name “Roswell Edgerton”.
