Rufus Allen Edgerton, son of Crispin Bull and Lucretia Smead (Allen) Edgerton.
“Rufus A. Edgerton, of Wallingford, Vermont” enlisted on November 26, 1861 as a private in the H Company, 1st Vermont Cavalry Regiment. The 1st Regiment was active mainly in northern Virginia and Maryland. Rufus Edgerton was taken prisoner in Banks’ retreat, May 27, 1862, and paroled from Bell Island, Sept. 16, 1862. He died in service “of disease” shortly afterwards, on November 6, 1862 at Annapolis, Maryland. His remains were returned to his hometown for burial at Green Hill Cemetery. Rufus’ name appears on the Civil War Roll of Honor Monument which stands in front of Gilbart Hart Library in Wallingford village.
