Samuel Edgerton II was born
at Norwich, Connecticut on March 15, 1703/4, the
eldest son of Samuel and Alice (Ripley) Edgerton. He was raised in Norwich
and resided there throughout his life, in the northwestern district of town
(later to become the town of Franklin). He was a farmer and planter.
Samuel was married at Norwich, Connecticut on
December 20, 1727 to Margaret Abell, the second daughter of Samuel and
Elizabeth (Sluman) Abell, also of Norwich. Margaret was born in Norwich on February 27,
1699/1700.
Samuel and Margaret Edgerton
had a family of three children – Zebulon, John and Anne. The family was fully recorded in the Vital
Records of Norwich (VRp I:105-106).
Samuel and Margaret’s youngest child, daughter, “Ann Edgerton”, was
baptized at the Franklin Congregational Church on January 20, 1734 (ChR
1:311). There are no baptisms recorded
at the Church for the two sons, Zebulon and John.
There are very few records
pertaining to Samuel and Margaret Edgerton, apart from the aforementioned
listing in the Norwich Vital Records. The
family entry there also records the deaths of Samuel and Margaret – on
September 21, 1780 and November 3, 1768, respectively. Samuel and Margaret were buried at the Old Franklin
Plains Cemetery
in Franklin (then Norwich),
Connecticut. Their elder son, Zebulon, and many of his
immediate family were buried at the Gagertown
Cemetery, in Franklin, where Samuel’s parents were
buried.
There are no records of this
family at any of the Franklin, Norwich or Bozrah
Churches; nor has any probate record
been found at Norwich
for either Samuel or Margaret.
