Samuel Edgerton was born at Norwich, Connecticut
on May 9, 1742, the third son and fourth child of Joshua and Ruth (Kingsbury)
Edgerton. He was baptized on June 6th
of the same year at the Franklin Congregational Church. Samuel was presumably named after his
paternal grandfather.
Samuel was raised in West Farms (Franklin), Connecticut. He was a farmer and planter. He was married on October 15, 1770 to
Elizabeth Paine, daughter of Elihu and
Elizabeth (Cleveland)
Paine of Canterbury, Connecticut. Elizabeth was born at Canterbury on July 25, 1752. Samuel and Elizabeth (Paine) Edgerton had a
family of four daughters: Ruth,
Permelia, Daphne and Betsey Paine. The family was fully recorded in the vital
records of Norwich (VRp I:470).
For much of his married life, Samuel lived on the
home farm in Franklin (then Norwich),
Connecticut. He built a house there, adjoining that of
his father, Joshua, as explained in the latter’s will:
“And further I would have my will so to be understood and
observed that the house which my son Samuel above named hath built at his own
cost that is adjoining to my house not to be reckoned as any part of my
estate, although the same stands on my land”
The
household of Samuel Edgerton was recorded in the 1790 Federal
Census of New London County, Connecticut (pg. 172), with the following
enumeration:
2 males “of 16 years and upwards” (Samuel and ?); and,
4 females (wife Elizabeth and daughters Ruth, Permelia
and Betsey).
Samuel and Elizabeth were probably members of the
Franklin Congregational Church. All
four of their daughters were married there in the 1790’s.
Samuel Edgerton served in the Revolutionary
War. He was listed in the DAR Patriot
Index (Part I, pg. 928) as a private in the Connecticut Continental
Line. According to the listing, Samuel
was born on May 9, 1742, was married to Elizabeth Paine and died after
1797. No other records of Samuel’s
military service have been found.
Shortly before the turn of the century, Samuel
removed from Connecticut to Oneida
County, New York, settling first in Westmoreland and then
removing to Whitestown. The move was
probably made soon after the marriage of his youngest daughter, Betsey P.
Edgerton, at the Franklin Congregational Church on September 9, 1798. Samuel was joined in this migration by his son-in-law,
Uriah Lathrop. A nephew, Ebenezer
Edgerton (son of his elder brother, Sims) followed soon after, settling in
Whitestown during the first decade of the 19th century. Samuel resided in the district of
Whitestown known as the “New Hartford Settlement”.
The household of Samuel “Eggiton” was recorded in
the 1800 Federal Census of Westmoreland, Oneida
County, New York (pg. 178), with the following enumeration:
1 male “over 45 years of age” (Samuel); and,
1 female “over 45 years of age” (wife Elizabeth).
Samuel’s son-in-law, Uriah Lathrop, was listed as
a head of household on the same page of the Oneida County
census roll.
Samuel Edgerton and his nephew, Ebenezer, were
listed in the 1810 Federal Census
of
Whitestown, Oneida County,
New York (pg. 88), as “S.
Edgerton” and “E. Edgerton”, respectively.
Samuel’s son-in-law, “U. Lathrop”, was listed on the previous page of
the Oneida County Census roll. The
household of “S. Edgerton” was enumerated as follows:
1 male “over 45 years of age” (Samuel);
1 female “of 26 and under 45” (wife Elizabeth – actually aged 58);
1 female “of 10 and under 16” (?); and,
1 female “under 10 years of age” (?)
The two younger females listed in this enumeration
were probably grandchildren of Samuel and Elizabeth.
Samuel Edgerton died at Whitestown, New York
in July 1818. His death was entered in
the records of the New Hartford United Presbyterian Church as that of “Mr.
Edgerton”. Samuel was survived by his
wife, Elizabeth, and at least two of his daughters – Ruth, wife of Jonathan
Taylor, and Daphne, wife of Seth Johnson.
Samuel left a Last Will and
Testament, dated March 12, 1816, which was proved on October 22, 1818 and
filed with Oneida County Probate, Book 2, pp. 131 – 133. In addition to his “beloved wife Elizabeth”
and the two daughters mentioned above, Samuel also made bequests to two of
his grandchildren – Samuel Edgerton Johnson and Sarah Hyde Taylor. The former was appointed joint executor of
the will, along with Samuel’s wife, Elizabeth. Samuel’s two other daughters, Permelia and
Betsey, were not mentioned anywhere in the will, so it is presumed that they
predeceased their father without issue.
Samuel’s
widow, Elizabeth (Paine) Edgerton, was probably the “Mrs. Edgerton” who was
listed as a head of household in the 1820
Federal Census of Whitestown, Oneida
County, New York
(pg. 299). The enumeration of her
household was as follows:
1 female “of 45 years and upwards” (Elizabeth);
and,
1 female “of 10 and under 16” (probably a granddaughter).
There is currently no record of the death of Mrs. Elizabeth
(Paine) Edgerton.
