“On Wednesday evening a fatal accident occurred on the Detroit & Bay City Railroad in this city by which a young man raised here and well esteemed was instantly killed.  At 6:15 pm a special train of light freight cars pulled out from the yards of the Detroit & Bay City Railroad in this city and the Mill Street bridge where the switch lines connect with the main trunk.  The train was wrecked in a disastrous manner through the carelessness of leaving an open switch.  Seamon Edgerton age 22 years son of Alanson Edgerton a former resident of this city now residing in Orion who was braking on the train was instantly killed by being crushed between the locomotive and tender and Tripp Lee the engineer and Lewis Agnew the fireman escaped miraculously.  Lee climbed from the window of the cab after the locomotive had turned upside down and Agnew escaped from under the tender where he was buried in the coal without a bruise.  The parents of the unfortunate young man arrived here shortly after the accident.”

Fatal Railroad Accident

A fatal accident occurred on the D.S. & B.C. Railroad at this city about 6:30 o’clock Wednesday evening, by which the engine tender and four cars of a freight train bound north were thrown from the track.  Seaman Edgerton, one of the brakeman, son of A. Edgerton, of the Lake House, Orion, was instantly killed, by being crushed between the engine and tender.  The engineer and fireman saved their lives by jumping off the train.  The accident was caused by a misplaced switch.  The deceased had, up to a year ago, resided with his parents in this city.  He was an industrious and frugal young man, 23 years of age.  The remains were taken to Orion for burial yesterday.

An inquest was held before Justice Barber Thursday.  The jury finds that the accident is attributable to the carelessness of the conductor and brakeman of a gravel or work train which had passed through the misplaced switch a few minutes previous to the accident.  They also censure the lighter of the switch lamps for neglect of duty in not lighting the lamps at the switch until some time after dark.”

The following notice of the funeral of Seaman H. Edgerton was published in the Lapeer Clarion on Thursday, November 11, 1880, pg. 1 (transcript courtesy of Diane Hosler):

The ceremonies attendant on the burial of Seamon Edgerton whose untimely death was noticed in these columns last week were of the character most fitting for the occasion.  Rev. [----] of Bay City delivered an effective sermon at the Universalist Church in this city after which a special train conveyed the remains to Orion where the deceased was interred temporarily to be removed to Almont Cemetery in a few weeks.  A large delegation from here accompanied to Orion where deceased had many young friends and the last sad rites were duly and impressively conducted.  The parents of the deceased wish to express their [----] to the citizens of Lapeer, especially to J.F. Knowles, P. McNamara and S.B. Marshall for their kindness.  Also to the Detroit and Bay City Railroad Co. for their many favors on the occasion and again to the young people of Lapeer and elsewhere for their kind attention.”
