Sereno’s occupation was listed as “retired
farmer”. The record incorrectly states
that Julia had not had any children.
The family was residing on Washington
Street.
Eugene Clark Lister’s Edgerton-Flint Ancestral
Lines (Oct. 1987, pp. 3-4) provides the following biography of Sereno
Dwight Edgerton:
“Sereno Dwight Edgerton, a pioneer of Jo Daviess County,
Illinois, was born in Coventry,
Connecticut 27 June 1823. He came west to Illinois
in 1831 with his parents, Asher and Chloe (Flint)
Edgerton, and located first in Quincy. After two years residence in Quincy the
family removed to a farm in Adams County, Illinois and in the spring of 1836 they moved to Hanover Township, Jo Daviess County where the
father took up a tract of government land.
The farm on which the Edgertons settled about four miles
west of the town of Hanover, Illinois, was purchased for $1.25 per
acre, and the Edgertons were the first settlers in the locality. Asher Edgerton lived on this farm until his
death in 1872.
As a young man, Sereno Dwight Edgerton worked on the
family farm in the summer and attended the primitive schools in the
winter. In 1843 he attended the
Academy in Galena, Illinois.
In 1845 he purchased his first land located about three miles west of Hanover and which
later became his home for many years.
On 26 Sep 1849, he married Julia Hammond, daughter of Ward K. and
Sophronia (Hale) Hammond.
In the early 1850’s he went to California
and worked in the gold fields for eighteen months, returning to Illinois by the
Nicaraugua route. He then resided on
the farm in Jo Daviess County until sometime in the 1880’s when he removed to
the town of Hanover. His home in Hanover overlooking the Apple river and
where he and his wife celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1899, is
still standing and is occupied by Mrs. Eunice Speer, an Edgerton descendant.”
