Seymour Edgerton, son of Levi and Jerusha (Fitch) Edgerton.
Laura Ann ----
Children:
Jane E. ----
Seymour Edgerton was born at Mansfield, Connecticut in the year 1810, the eldest son of Levi and Jerusha (Fitch) Edgerton. The exact date of Seymour’s birth is unknown, but it is certain to have been early in the year 1810, prior to his parents removal to Hyde Park Vermont in the summer of that year. The family had settled in Hyde Park by the time of the 1810 Federal Census, when Seymour’s father, Levi, was listed as a head of household in Hyde Park (then part of Orleans County, Vermont). Seymour Edgerton was raised in Hyde Park, Vermont. On April 2, 1832, Seymour’s father administered to him the Freeman’s oath at Hyde Park – the record of such reading as follows: “April 2, 1832…Semour Edgerton & Ebenezer Fitch were administered the freeman’s oath and were duly sworn by Levi Edgerton, Justice of the Peace” (Hyde Park Town Records, pg. 105) Seymour Edgerton was married twice. His first wife was named Laura Ann. From later census and burial records (see below), it is known that Laura was born in Vermont circa 1812, however neither her parentage nor surname have been discovered. Seymour and Laura had two daughters: Chloe Melissa, who married John Myers, and Julia A., who married Sylvander V. Howard. The 1850 Federal Census shows a “John [Edgerton]”, aged 12, residing in Seymour’s household, but he is not believed to be a son of Seymour and Laura Edgerton – particularly since no such son was represented in the 1840 Census enumeration of the family, nor is there any further evidence of him. The household of “Semour Edgerton” was recorded in the 1840 Federal Census of Hyde Park, Lamoille County, Vermont (pg. 14), with the following enumeration: 1 male “30 and under 40” (Seymour); 1 female “20 and under 30” (wife Laura); 1 female “5 and under 10” (daughter Chloe); and, 1 female “under 5 years” (daughter Julia). In the 1840’s, Seymour Edgerton removed from Vermont to Clinton County, New York – in the far northeast corner of the state. After residing briefly in Beekmantown, he settled finally in the town of Dannemora, where he resided for the remainder of his life. The household of Seymour Edgerton was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of Beekmantown, Clinton County, New York (14; dwelling #201, family #203; enum. August 6, 1850), as follows:
The household of “Semor” Edgerton was recorded in the 1860 Federal Census of Dannemora, Clinton County, New York (pg. 74; dwelling #456; family #436; enum. August 20, 1860), as follows:
Mrs. Laura Ann Edgerton died on October 10, 1864,
aged 52 years – presumably at Dannemora, New York. She was buried at the Cadyville Cemetery in nearby Plattsburgh,
New York. By the time of the 1870
Federal Census, Seymour had taken a second wife, Jane E. According to census and burial records,
Jane was born circa 1820, either in Connecticut or Ireland. Jane’s maiden name is not known. She may have been related to the various
Parkhurst individuals who were mentioned in her will. (eg. “Jane or Jennie Parkhurst”,
“Ella Parkhust wife of Henry Parkhurst”) The household of “Seymore” Edgerton was recorded
in the 1870 Federal Census of Dannemora, Clinton County, New York (pp.
289-290; dwelling #49; family #49; enum. July 27, 1870), as follows:
The household of Seymour Edgerton was recorded in
the 1880 Federal Census of Dannemora, Clinton County, New York (pg. 274;
dwelling #73; family #82; enum. June 8, 1880), as follows:
Seymour Edgerton died at Dannemora, New York on
July 30, 1884; a copy of his death certificate was filed with the New York State
Department of Health (year 1884; certificate #11285). Seymour was buried beside his first wife,
Laura, at the Cadyville Cemetery, in Plattsburgh, New York, where the family
monument records an alternate date of death of July 31st. Seymour Edgerton left a Last Will and Testament, dated July 7, 1871, which was
proved at Clinton County Surrogate Court on September 1, 1884, before Darril
F. Dobie, Surrogate. In the will,
Seymour referred to himself as “Seymour Edgerton of Dannemora N. Y. of the
age of Sixty one years”. He left to
his wife, “Jane E. Edgerton”, a life interest in all the real and personal
estate, and instructed that upon her death the estate be divided equally
among his “children then surviving…share and share alike”. None of Seymour’s
children were mentioned in the will by name.
Mrs. Jane E. Edgerton (Seymour’s second wife) and Darril W. Marsh were
named as joint executors. The will
was witnessed by George L. Clark and Sylvander V. Howard, both residents of
Plattsburgh, New York (the latter Seymour’s son-in-law). Mrs. Jane E. Edgerton died at Dannemora, New York
on February 4, 1900, aged 80 years. A
copy of her death certificate was filed with the New York State Department of
Health (year 1900, certificate #4473).
Jane left a Last Will and
Testament, dated at Dannemora on November 16, 1894. In the will, Jane mentioned a number of
Parkhurst individuals, as well as the children of her step-daughter, Chloe
(Edgerton) Myers. The will was
witnessed by William L. Patterson and John A. Hagar, both of
Plattsburgh. H. E. Barnard of
Plattsburgh was named as executor. Seymour Edgerton and his two wives were buried in
the same plot at Cadyville Cemetery in the town of Plattsburgh. A joint monument there bears the following
inscription: Seymour Edgerton Died July 31, 1884, AE. 74
