Silas W. Edgerton  (“student, aged 18, residence: Dalton, NY”) enlisted on July 24, 1862 for service as a Private in the K Company of the 34th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment.  He was promoted to Second Lieutenant on February 19, 1864 and transferred to the United States Colored Troops.  His commission was with the H Company of the 30th Infantry Regiment, which fought in battles in Virginia and North Carolina from June 1864 – December 1865.  Silas Edgerton resigned his commissioin with the H Company on March 21, 1865.  He reenlisted on April 3, 1865 at Albany, New York as a Captain in the I Company of the 192nd Infantry Regiment of New York.  The company was not active in any battles, and Silas was mustered out at Cumberland, Maryland on August 28, 1865 (see Massachusetts Soldiers, Sailors and Marines in the Civil War; New York: Report of the Adjutant-General).

 

The Alumni Records of the Drew Theological Seminary (1869 – 1895) provide the following entry for Silas Wright Edgerton:

 

“Edgerton, Silas Wright. – was born June 3, 1844, at West Troy, N.Y.; attended the University of Vermont one year; in the United States army, 1862-65; Drew Theological Seminary, 1869-70; entered the Troy Conference, 1871; appointments: ‘71, Third Street, Troy, N.Y.; ‘72, Pownal, Vt.; ‘73, ‘74, Dannemora, N.Y.; ‘75, Ticonderoga, N.Y.; ‘76-‘78, Shushan, N.Y.; ‘79, Fort Ann, N.Y.; ‘80-‘92, chaplain of Sing Sing State Prison; ‘93, Hagaman’s Mills, N.Y.; ‘94, ‘95, Stillwater, N.J.”

According to the above census record, Adelaide was the mother of two children, both of whom were still living.  Silas’ occupation was listed as “clergyman”, James was listed as a “telegraph operator”, and Charles was noted as “at school”.
