Sims Edgerton was born at Stamford, Vermont on April 26, 1792, the second child and eldest son of Roswell and Sarah (Selden) Edgerton.  He was raised principally in Rome, Oneida County, New York, where his parents had settled a few years after his birth.  His name is occasionally found misstated as “Lewis Edgerton” – most likely due to a misreading of the older penmanship where the two names can appear quite similar.

Sims Edgerton served as a private in the War of 1812.  His name is found on the muster rolls of the 14th New York Militia Regiment and the 157th New York Militia Regiment.  On September 10, 1844, Sims was granted a patent of eighty acres of land in Walworth County, Wisconsin from the Federal Government.  In the same year, “Lewis Edgerton” of Spring Prairie, Wisconsin was granted a claim of $28.00 based upon his service in the War of 1812 (see Index of Awards on Claims of the Soldiers of the War of 1812; New York Adjutant General’s Office; Albany, New York: Clearfield Co.; 1860; pg. 159).

Sims Edgerton was married several times – some accounts report as many as five times.  Currently, three wives have been definitely documented:  Polly Holbert, Harriet Benedict, and Mrs. Maria (Taber) Crego.

Sims married Polly Holbert on February 22, 1821 at Rome, New York.  Polly’s parentage is not known.  She may have been related to Nancy Hurlbut, who married Sims’ younger brother, Gideon Eleazer.  Sims and Polly had two daughters, Sarah Jane and Deborah Cordelia, both of whom died in infancy.  Mrs. Polly (Holbert) Edgerton died at Rome on October 18, 1824.  Sims married next, on January 20, 1832 at Rome, Harriet Benedict, daughter of Stephen and Elizabeth (White) Benedict of Rome, New York.  Sims and Harriet had three children:  two sons, Stephen Roswell and Charles Selden, and one daughter, Sarah Elizabeth.  Harriet died at Verona, New York on December 23, 1887 and was buried in the Bennington plot at Verona Cemetery.  The family monument there was inscribed with the complete dates of her birth and death.  Sims’ last wife was Mrs. Maria E. (Taber) Crego, daughter of Archelaus and Anna (Maxson) Taber and widow of Hiram Crego.  Sims and Maria were married at Rome on September 24, 1844.

The household of Sims Edgerton was recorded in the 1840 Federal Census of Verona, Oneida County, New York (pg. 435), with the following enumeration:

2 males “40 and under 50”  (Sims and ?);

1 male “5 and under 10”  (son Stephen);

1 female “40 and under 50”  (?);

1 female “15 and under 20”  (?); and,

1 female “5 and under 10”  (daughter Sarah).

Circa 1846, Sims Edgerton removed west to Walworth County, Wisconsin.  He settled in the town of Spring Prairie, where he resided for the remainder of his lifetime.  Sims’ younger brothers, Thomas Selden and Hiram, also removed to Wisconsin about this time, settling further north in Beaver Dam and Fond du Lac, respectively.

The household of Sims Edgerton was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of Spring Prairie, Walworth County, Wisconsin  (pg. 189; dwelling #354; family #357; enum. August 9, 1850), as follows:
