born:

April 1, 1787; Franklin, Delaware Co., NY.

died:

January 4, 1832; Olean, Cattaraugus Co., NY.  (OB Delaware Co. Gazette)

Thomas Edgerton was born April 1, 1787 at Franklin, New York.  He was the second-eldest son of Nathan and Sally (Belshaw) Edgerton, who had just recently removed to Franklin from Norwich, Connecticut.   Thomas Edgerton is said to have been the first white child born in the the town of Franklin.

Very little is known about the life of Thomas Edgerton.  At the time of his maturity, he left his hometown and settled in Geneseo, New York – in the far western part of the state in what was originally Ontario County but now a part of Livingston County.  In 1818, Thomas Edgerton purchased by deed three tracts of land in Geneseo from Isaac Smith, Thomas Beach and William Finley (see Ontario County Deeds, Book 30, pp. 350, 352, 354).

Census records indicate that Thomas was married and had a family, although no evidence of their identities has been discovered.

The household of Thomas Edgerton was recorded in the 1820 Federal Census of Geneseo, Livingston County (then Ontario County), New York (pg. 197), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 26 and under 45”  (Thomas);

1 male “of 10 and under 16”  (son ?);

1 female “of 26 and under 45”  (wife ?); and,

1 female “of 16 and under 26”  (?).

Thomas Edgerton was also listed as a head of household in the 1830 Federal Census of Geneseo, Livingston County, New York (pg. 13).  The enumeration of his household at that time was as follows:

1 male “of 40 and under 50”  (Thomas);

1 male “of 10 and under 15”  (son ?);

1 female “of 30 and under 40”  (wife ?); and,

1 female “under 5 years of age”  (daughter ?).

Thomas Edgerton died at Olean, Cattaraugus County, New York on January 4, 1832.  The following obituary notice was published in the Delaware County Gazette (publication date unknown):

“DIED…Thomas Edgerton, formerly of Franklin, about 42 years, at Olean January 4th, inst.”

There is currently no record of where Thomas Edgerton was buried, nor is there any further account of his wife or children.
