Urban Curtis Edgerton, son of Ebenezer Leffingwell and Edna Amanda (Harris) Edgerton.
Harriet Damon, daughter of Jonathan and Betsey (Stebbins) Damon.

Urban Curtis Edgerton was born at Pawlet, Vermont
on December 13, 1816, the eldest child of Ebenezer Leffingwell and Edna
Amanda (Harris) Edgerton. His first
name is found alternatively listed in some records as “Urbane”. Very little is known of Urban’s upbringing. During his infancy, his parents removed
with several relatives to the town of Moriah, in Essex County, New York. Urban’s mother died when he was 11 years
old; and upon his maturity, he removed to the city of Rochester, New York,
where he resided for several years. He
made his living as a contractor and merchant. The marriage of Urban C. Edgerton and Harriet
Damon was recorded in the Vital Records of Springfield, Hampden County,
Massachusetts (Book 3, pg. 238).
According to the marriage entry, Urban was “of Rochester, N.Y.” and
Harriet was “of Cabotville. The
marriage was solemnized by “Albert A. Folson Pastor Universalist Society
Cabotville.” Urban and Harriet residing initially in Rochester,
Monroe County, New York. They had a
family of four children, all born at Rochester: two daughters, Maria Elizabeth and Harriet
Eleanor; and two sons, Henry Clay and Curtis Chamberlain. The elder son died at the age of twelve
years. The other three children were
each married and had families. The household of “U. C.” Edgerton was recorded in
the 1850
Federal Census of Rochester (Ward 1),
Monroe County, New York (pg. 77; dwelling #482; family #599; enum. August 17,
1850), as follows:
Urban C. Edgerton was residing in Rochester as late
as September 17, 1855, on which date he and William H. Douglas were awarded a
contract for the enlargement of Section #265 of the Erie Canal (see Documents of the Assembly of the State of
New York, Seventy-Ninth Session – 1856; Vol. 3, No. 100; Albany, New
York: C. Van Benthuysen, Printer; 1856; pg. 237). In the latter 1850’s, Urban removed from New York
State and settled in the city of Jacksonville in Morgan County, Illinois. The household of “Ubone Egerton” was recorded in the 1860 Federal Census of Jacksonville, Morgan County, Illinois (pg. 329; dwelling #37; family #36; enum. June 1, 1860), as follows:
Urban Curtis Edgerton died at Jacksonville, Illinois
on September 22, 1863, aged 46 years.
He was buried at East Cemetery in Jacksonville. Urban’s young son, Henry, and his wife,
Harriet, are also buried in the family plot at East Cemetery. According to the records of the Mutual
Benefit Life Insurance Company, “Urban C. Edgerton of Jacksonville, Ill.”
held a life insurance policy (#1060) in the amount of $3,000 (see Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company,
Thirty-First Annual Report of the President to the Board of Directors;
Newark, New Jersey; January 1876; pg. 49). At the time of the 1870
Federal Census, Mrs. Harriet (Damon) Edgerton and her younger daughter,
Harriet, were recorded in the household of her son-in-law, Harrison O.
Cassell, in Jacksonville, Morgan County, Illinois (pg. 540; dwelling #3;
family #3; enum. June 1, 1870). The
household was enumerated as follows:
The household of Mrs. Harriet Edgerton was recorded
in the 1900
Federal Census of Jacksonville (Ward 4), Morgan County, Illinois (pg.
230; dwelling #243; family #255; enum. June 11, 1900), as follows:
According to the above census record, Harriet was
the mother of six children, two of whom were still living; and Maria was the mother
of three children, all of whom were still living. The family was residing at 502 South
