The following obituary for Ward Godwin Edgerton
was published in the Duluth News Tribune on May 1, 2004:
“Ward G. Edgerton, Attorney-at-Law, 69, of Duluth died Friday,
April 30, 2004 in Edgewood Vista surrounded by his family. He died of complications of Alzheimer’s
disease with which he had been afflicted for the past 10 years. He was born Oct. 25, 1934 in St. Paul to George and
Mary (Palmer) Edgerton. He was a
graduate of White Bear Lake High School, earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota,
and his law degree from William
Mitchell Law
School. During the summers of his high school years
he taught horse back riding to girls at the Sherwood Forest Camp in Grand Rapids, Minn. He worked part time as a farrier while in
college and then for 3-M during law school.
He was a member of the Army Reserves from 1955 until 1961. Ward moved to Duluth in 1964 and went into practice at
the Hoag & Edwards law firm. In
1969 he formed a new law firm, Reischel, Theobold & Edgerton. They served as legal council to the St.
Louis County Federal Savings & Loan for 25 years. Ward and Ray Theobald
bought the Arrowhead Abstract Co., which then became the Arrowhead Abstract
& Title Company, and in 1989 they devoted their full time to this
business. Ward was a very gracious and
generous person, always willing to help out realtors, clients and friends,
often without charge. In addition to
his legal practice, Ward started Northern Recreation Travel which provided
the first charter flights between Duluth and Las Vegas. He then bought out the All World Travel
Agency and merged the companies into Destination Travel. By the time he sold Destination Travel to
his employees, they had built up the business to include three locations in Duluth. Ward was a member of the Skyline Kiwanis
and the Minnesota Bar Association. He
enjoyed traveling, carpentry projects, and spending time at the family cabin
in Wascott, Wis.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and by a brother, George
Edgerton. He is survived by his wife,
Marsha; sons Trent (Angela) Edgerton and Burke Edgerton all of Duluth;
stepdaughters Joy (Vincent) Lamela of New Jersey, Heidi (James) Owens of
Henderson, Nev., and Kimberely Roberts of Bethesda, Md.; seven grandchildren,
Brittany, Grace, Chloe, Jack, Greg, Maxwell, and Olivia; a niece, Meg
Edgerton and a nephew Tim Edgerton.
The family would like to thank their ‘extended family’, the
care-givers at Edgewood Vista’s Alzheimer’s Unit, for the special care they
gave to Ward. Memorials to the Duluth
Regional Center
of the Alzheimer’s Association would be appreciated (special envelopes will
be available at the funeral home). VISITATION: 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m.
funeral service on Monday in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home. A private family committal service will be
held later in the day at the Gordon Memorial Cemetery
in Gordon, Wis.”
