The following biography of Wells Edgerton is excerpted from Pioneer Photographers from the Mississippi to the Continental Divide, A Biographical Dictionary, 1839 – 1865 (Peter E. Palmquist & Thomas R. Kailbourn; Stanford, Cal.: Stanford University Press; 2005; pg. 230):

“Edgerton, Wells (1805 – 1878) “Artist”; active Pleasant Gap Township, Mo. 1860.

Wells Edgerton was born March 8, 1805, in Brecksville, Ohio.  His parents were Joseph Edgerton (1768 – 1849) and Caroline Rice Edgerton (1770 – 1853).  On December 29, 1831, Edgerton marriaged Lydia Bishop Evarts, who was born in New York on November 23, 1810.  The 1860 census of Pleasant Gap Township, Missouri listed him as ‘Wells Edgarton,’ a fifty-five-year-old “artist” with real estate worth $1,000 and personal property worth $500.  It is not certain if he was a daguerreian.  The census spelled his wife’s name as ‘Leda B. Edgarton’ and gave her age as forty-six, born in New York.  Their children were Emeline E., age eighteen, born in Ohio; and Alice S., twelve, and Guy L., six, both of whom were born in Ohio.  Lydia Edgerton died on January 21, 1873; her husband followed her in death on February 25, 1878.”
