William Edgerton was born August 28, 1763 at Norwich, Connecticut, the son of Asa Edgerton and his first wife, Hannah Griswold.  He was no doubt named after his paternal grandfather, who had died just a few years earlier.  William’s mother died when he was less than three years old.

William was raised in Norwich, Connecticut.  In 1781, he removed along with his father and brothers to Randolph, Orange County, Vermont.  William was married there on February 19, 1788 to Hannah Blodgett, daughter of Seth and Susannah (Orcutt) Blodgett.  The Blodgett family had come to Randolph from Stafford, Tolland County, Connecticut, where Hannah was born on March 2, 1769.

William and Hannah resided in Randolph for the majority of their married life.  Later in life, they resided briefly in the nearby town of Warren (Washington County), where William was listed in the 1830 Federal Census.

William and Hannah (Blodgett) Edgerton had a familly of seven children.  The four elder children – Nabby, Loren, Statira and Giles – were recorded together in the Vital Records of Randolph (Book A, pg. 44), probably shortly after Giles birth in 1796.  Three more children were born after the family entry was made – a son, William Orpheus, born in 1800, who died at the age of 13 years; and two daughters, Mary Ann, born in 1807, and Hannah Susannah, born in 1813.

The household of William Edgerton was recorded in the 1790 Federal Census of Randolph, Orange County, Vermont (pg. 76), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 16 years and upwards”  (William);

1 male “under 16 years”  (?); and,

2 females  (wife Hannah, and daughter Nabby).

William was also listed as a head of household in the 1800 Federal Census of Randolph, Orange County, Vermont (pg. 563).  His family at that time was enumerated as follows:

2 males “of 45 and upwards”  (?);

2 males “of 26 and under 45”  (William and ?);

3 males “under 10 years of age”  (sons Loren, Giles and William);

1 female “of 26 and under 45”  (wife Hannah); and,

2 females “under 10 years of age”  (daughters Statira and ?).

The household of “Wm Edgerton” was enumerated in the 1810 Federal Census of Randolph, Orange County, Vermont (pg. 391), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 45 years and upwards”  (William);

1 male “of 16 and under 26”  (son Loren);

1 male “of 10 and under 16”  (son Giles);

1 male “under 10 years of age”  (son William);

2 females “of 26 and under 45”  (wife Hannah and ?);

1 female “of 10 and under 16”  (daughter Statira); and,

1 female “under 10 years of age”  (daughter Mary).

The household of William Edgerton was recorded in the 1820 Federal Census of Randolph, Orange County, Vermont (pg. 221), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 45 years and upward”  (William);

1 male “of 16 and under 26”  (son Giles);

1 female “of 45 years and upwards”  (wife Hannah);

1 female “of 26 and under 45”  (daughter Statira);

1 female “of 10 and under 16”  (daughter Mary); and,

1 female “under 10 years of age”  (daughter Hannah).

The eldest son, Loren (aged 29), was apparently out on his own by this time.  He may have been living with his uncle, Lebbeus Edgerton, whose household was enumerated with a number of unnacounted for individuals, including one male “of 26 and under 45”.

At the time of the 1830 Federal Census, William Edgerton was recorded as a head of household in the village of Warren, in Washington County, Vermont (pg. 291).  The enumeration of his household was as follows:

1 male “of 70 and under 80”  (William – actually aged 67);

1 female “of 60 and under 70”  (wife Hannah);

1 female “of 20 and under 30”  (daughter Mary); and,

1 female “of 15 and under 20”  (daughter Hannah).

William Edgerton died on October 15, 1834, presumably at Randolph, Vermont, although no death record has been located.  He was buried at the Randolph Center Cemetery, where his gravestone was inscribed:  “WILLIAM EDGERTON / died Oct. 15, 1834 / ae 71 years”.  Mrs. Hannah (Blodgett) Edgerton survived her husband fifteen years.  She died on February 2, 1849, and was buried beside her husband at Randolph Center Cemetery.  Hannah’s gravestone was inscribed with the following epitaph:  “HANNAH / Widow of / William Edgerton / BORN / March 2, 1769 / DIED / Feb 2, 1849 / aged 79 years”.

Two of William and Hannah’s children died in childhood – Nabby on April 26, 1797 at the age of eight, and William Orpheus on December 9, 1813 at the age of thirteen.  Both children were buried beside their parents at the Randolph Center Cemetery.  The eldest son, Loren, was mistakenly listed in the family record as a daughter; he was married to Laura Arnold in 1824 and resided in Northfield, Vermont.  There is no further account of the second daughter, Statira.  Giles, the second-born son, removed to New York State; he was married to Abigail Starkweather and resided in Galway, New York.  The next-to-youngest daughter, Mary Ann, was married to Elias Blanchard Sherman and resided in Warren and Randolph.  The youngest daughter, Hannah Susannah, was married to Philander Perrin and resided in Randolph.
