William Edgerton was born at Norwich, Connecticut on April 23, 1795, the second son of Simon and Lucy (Griswold) Edgerton.  He was baptized, together with his four brothers, on November 27, 1809 at the First Congregational Church of Norwich.

William was raised in Norwich, and was married there on March 16, 1816 to Miss Lucy Wood.  To date, nothing is known of Lucy’s parentage or ancestry and there is no record that William and Lucy had any children together.  Census records (see below) indicate that Lucy was many years older than William.

William Edgerton was listed as a head of household in the 1820 Federal Census of Norwich City, New London County, Connecticut (pg. 627).  He was recorded as “William Edgerton Junr.”, in order to distinguish him from a distant elder cousin – “William Edgerton 2nd” – who was also listed in this census.

The household of “William Edgerton Junr.” was enumerated in the 1820 Federal Census of Norwich City, New London County, Connecticut (pg. 627), with the following individuals:

1 male “of 16 and under 26”  (William); and,

1 female “of 45 years and upwards”  (wife Lucy).

The household of “Wm. Edgerton” was recorded in the 1830 Federal Census of Norwich, New London County, Connecticut (pg. 124), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 30 and under 40”  (William); and,

1 female “of 60 and under 70”  (wife Lucy).

On July 12, 1835, Mrs. Lucy (Wood) Edgerton, “of Norwich” petitioned the Connecticut Court for a divorce.  According to the application, Lucy had married William Edgerton, “then of Norwich…now of Providence, Rhode Island”, on March 16, 1816.  The grounds for divorce were cited as “desertion”.  The divorce was subsequently granted (see Knox, Grace Louise and Barbara B. Ferris (comp.); Connecticut Divorces – Superior Court Records for the Counties of New London, Tolland and Windham, 1719 – 1910; Heritage Books, Inc.; Bowie, Maryland, 1987; pg. 49).

The household of Mrs. Lucy Edgerton was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of Norwich, New London County, Connecticut (pg. 322; dwelling #2201; family #2739-2740; enum. November 2, 1850), as follows:

Mrs. Lucy (Wood) Edgerton died at New London, Connecticut on November 13, 1852.  She left a Last Will and Testament, dated October 31, 1852, in which she left her estate to “Susannah Hyde & Solomon Williams Hyde of said Norwich to them & their Heirs and Assigns forever…”  Roger Huntington “of said Norwich” was named as executor of the will, which was witnessed by Amelia H. Huntington, Elizabeth C. Lambert and Roger Huntington.  The will was proved at Norwich Probate Court on December 14, 1852, before George B. Ripley, Judge of Probate.
