The following biography of William Driggs Edgerton has been provided by Mr. Foster Dunwiddie, from his extensive family research.  Mr. Dunwiddie is a great-grandson of William Driggs Edgerton and Helen Marion (Martin) Edgerton through their youngest son, Wilfred Henry.

“William Driggs Edgerton was the youngest child of Thomas Selden and Stattira (Driggs) Edgerton. He grew up on the family farm in Rome Township, Oneida County, New York.  In 1850 he married Helen Marion Martin, the daughter of David and Theresa (Denison) Martin. They set up housekeeping in Rome Township living next door to William’s parents, Thomas Selden and Stattira Edgerton.

In 1854, they moved to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin where they stayed three years.  William’s uncle, Hiram Edgerton, and his family were living near Fond du Lac at the time.

In 1857, the family moved to Pennsylvania where they resided for eight years.  Finally in 1865, they came to Beaver Dam, Wisconsin where William Driggs Edgerton bought a livery stable on Spring Street.  The Edgerton house stood across the street on the site of the former railroad depot.  The Edgerton’s sold their house to the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad for the site of the railroad station.

They moved to a house on the east side of University Avenue immediately north of 313 South University Avenue.  Helen Marion (Martin) Edgerton and her daughter, Olive Stattira Edgerton lived in the house until the death of Mrs. Edgerton in 1910.  The house was later torn down.”
