William Edward Edgerton was born at West Troy, New York on September 20, 1846, the son of William Stewart and Elizabeth (Smith) Edgerton. He was baptised together with his four elder siblings on March 20, 1849 at the First Reformed Church of Minden, Montgomery County, New York. He was referred to variously as William Edward Edgerton (the name on his baptismal record), William E. Edgerton, and William S. Edgerton II. The latter is found uniformly on his military records. On August 26, 1861, “William S. Edgerton II, of Meriden, Connecticut”, enlisted along with his father, William, and elder brother, Henry Augustus, for service in the 7th Connecticut Infantry Regiment, Company C. He served as a musician (as did his father), and was mustered out on September 12, 1864. William Edgerton was married three times. His first was Lenora F. Pettibone, daughter of Freeman and Clarissa (Miller) Pettibone of Ashfield, Massachusetts. William and Lenora had four known children: a daughter, Gertrude, born in Ashfield, Massachusetts in 1867, a son, William F., born in Meriden, Connecticut in 1871, a daughter born in Meriden, Connecticut on August 17, 1872, and a third daughter, Lillian Lenora, born in Ashfield, Massachusetts on August 19, 1876. The record of the third child’s birth lists her as the third child of “Wm. S. Edgerton Jr.” (aged 23, painter, b. in Albany, New York) and “L. F. Pettibone” (aged 22, b. in Ashfield, Mass.). Mrs. Lenora F. (Pettibone) Edgerton died at Ashfield, Massachusetts in the year 1876. The household of “Wm. S. Edgerton” was recorded in the 1870 Federal Census of Meriden, New Haven County, Connecticut (pg. 346; dwelling #460; families #602-3; enum. June 1870), as follows:
At the time of this census, William and his family were also enumerated in the household of his father, William S. Edgerton (1870 Federal Census; Meriden, New Haven County; pg. 390; dwelling #1021; family #1368). William’s second wife was Weatlhy Rowena Noble, daughter of William and Roxy (Grant) Noble of Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Wealthy was born in Brighton, Livington County, Michigan on July 6, 1840. William and Wealthy were married in Pittsfield on December 26, 1867, and had one son, Arthur Wilbur Edgerton, who was born in Pittsfield on July 22, 1878 and died there on September 4th of the same year. William and Wealthy were divorced and William was married a third time on September 10, 1891 to Frances Patrick Eitelman, daughter of Frederick and Sophia (Hall) Eitelman. William S. Edgerton II applied for a Civil War Invalid Pension on December 3, 1890. The application was filed from the state of New York and cited William's service as a musician in the 7th Connecticut Infantry Regiment, Company D. “G. E. According to the above census record, Frances had not had any children, William’s occupation was listed as “pedler (tra)”. William’s second wife, Wealthy, was still living in Pittsfield at this time. She was recorded in the 1900 Federal Census of Pittsfield, Berkshire County, Massachusetts (dwelling #21; family #28; enum. June 11, 1900), as follows:
Wealthy was residing as a lodger in the household of Edward Humphrey. According to the record, she was the mother of one child, who was still living. The household of “William S. Edgerton” was recorded in the 1910 Federal
