William Gustavus Edgerton was born at Pawlet, Vermont on July 5, 1830, the eldest son of Jacob Edgerton Jr. and Narcissa Henrietta Gregory.  He was raised in Pawlet and Rutland, Vermont.  He made his living as a clerk and laborer.

 

William G. Edgerton, “of Rutland, Vermont”, enlisted in the Union Army on May 2, 1861.  He was mustered into the 1st Vermont Infantry, Co. K on May 9, 1861 with the rank of 1st Sergeant.  The company fought at the Battle of Bethel, Virginia on June 10, 1861.  He was mustered out on August 15, 1861, at which time he was commissioned as Captain in the 11th U.S. Infantry.  William was promoted to Brevet Major April 2, 1865 for gallant services in the field at Petersburg.  He transferred to the 29th U.S. Infantry on Sept. 21, 1866 and retired from the Army on Nov. 2, 1867 (see Roster of Vermont Volunteers During the War of the Rebellion 1861-66; 1892).  “Lucy Seymour Edgerton, widow of William G. Edgerton”, applied for a Civi War widow’s pension on October 23, 1916.  The application was filed from the state of Vermont and cited William’s service as a sergeant in the 1st Vermont Infantry, Co. K and as a captain in the 11th United States Infantry (see National Archives Pension Applications; Application #1082920, Certificate #836398).  

 

William G. Edgerton was married at Middlebury, Vermont on September 30, 1862 to Lucy Seymour, daughter of Ozias and Mary Louise (Hagar) Edgerton.  William and Lucy resided in Middlebury, Vt., Rutland, Vt. and Richmond, Va.  They had two children:  a daughter, Louise Hagar, born June 17, 1864 at Middlebury, Vermont; and a son, William Seymour, born August 18, 1866 at Richmond, Virginia.

William Gustavus Edgerton died at Rutland, Vermont on March 3, 1886.  He was buried in the family plot at Evergreen Cemetery in Rutland.  The large Edgerton monument on the burial plot bears the following inscription for him:

According to the above census record, Lucy was the mother of two children, both of whom were still living; and Louise was the mother of one child.  Louise was listed as a “servant”, and Edwin as a “physician”.

 

Mrs. Lucy (Seymour) Edgerton died at Fair Haven, Vermont on September 6, 1926.  Her death certificate filed at the Fair Haven Town Clerk’s Office (Deaths, Book 14, pg. 203), provides the following particulars:
