William M. Edgerton, son of Jabez and Eliza (Bradley) Edgerton.
Anna W. Heald, daughter of John and Hannah Heald.
Children:
William M. Edgerton was born at As a young man, William removed to Tisbury, Dukes
County, Massachusetts (on Martha’s Vineyard), where he was married on March
28, 1852 to Anna W. Heald, daughter of John and Hannah Heald. A notice of the marriage was printed in the
Vineyard Gazette on April 2, 1852.
According to the announcement, William and Anna were both “of Tisbury”
and the marriage took place at Holmes Hole. A record of the marriage is also found in the
Vital Records of Tisbury (Marriages in Tisbury, Dukes Co., Massachusetts,
1850 - 1853, p. 12). According to
the record, “William M. Egerton” (single, age 25, mariner, b. Hudson, New
York, resident of Tisbury, parents: Walter [sic] and Elisa Egerton) and “Ann
W. Heald” (single, age 25 [sic], seamstress, b. Madison, Maine, resident of
Tisbury, parents: John and Hannah Heald) were married on March 28, 1852 at Tisbury by “Geo. W.
Stearns, Methodist Clergyman”. William and Anna (Heald) Edgerton had a son,
William O., born April 10, 1856 at Tisbury.
The 1900 and 1910 Federal Censuses (see below) reports that Anna had
had another child, who probably died young.
No evidence of this child’s identity has been found. The household of William M. Edgerton was recorded
in the 1860 Federal Census of Tisbury,
William
M. Edgerton’s name was included on the “Enrollment of citizens of the town of
Tisbury, between the ages of 18 and 45 years, pursuant to an order of the
President of the United States, dated August 4, 1862”, as published in the Vineyard
Gazette (September 12, 1862 issue), the entry being: “William M. Edgerton, at sea”. The family of William Edgerton was recorded in the
1870 Federal Census of Chicago (Ward 17),
William’s household at this time also included the
family of James and Harriet Golden and several other individuals. William M. Edgerton died at Mrs. Anna W. (Heald) Edgerton was recorded in the
1900 Federal Census of West Town (Chicago, Ward 13), The household of Mrs. “Anna W. Egerton” was recorded
in the 1910 Federal Census of Chicago City (Ward 14),
According to the above census record, Anna was the
mother of two children, one of whom was still living. The family was residing at |
