William Seymour Edgerton was born August 18, 1866 at Richmond, Virginia, the only son of William Gustavus and Lucy (Seymour) Edgerton.  Although his full given name was William Seymour, he appears to have gone generally by his middle name – Seymour.  Most records, including his death record and various census records, refer to him simply as “Seymour Edgerton”.

The following biography of William Seymour Edgerton is extracted from Proceedings of the Vermont Historical Society for the Years 1921, 1922 & 1923 (Montpelier, Vermont: Capital City Press; 1924; pg. 281):

“SEYMOUR EDGERTON

Seymour Edgerton was born in Richmond, Va., August 18, 1866, son of Captain William G. and Lucy (Seymour) Edgerton.  His father resigned from the U. S. army in 1868 and returned to Vermont.  His mother was a member of the well known Seymour family of Middlebury, Vermont.

Seymour graduated from the Rutland, Vt., high school in 1884, and from Middlebury College in 1888.  He was a member of the Chi Psi Fraternity.  He studied law in the office of Gov. John W. Stewart and Chas. M. Wilds of Middlebury, then entered the office of his Uncle Thomas Brougham of Chicago and studied in the Chicago Law school and was admitted to the Illinois bar.  He practiced law over thirty years in Chicago.

He married on Nov. 1 [sic], 1899, Harriet Richardson of Riverside, Ill.  Two sons were born to them, Dan Erskine, who is entering a business career, and Seymour Piran, about to enter the Harvard Law School.

Mr. Edgerton suddenly lost his voice in a courtroom in May, 1922, and had to drop all business immediately.  He spent the remaining months of his life with his sister, Mrs. Edwin B. Clift of Fair Haven, Vt., under the care of her husband, Dr. Clift.  He died Feb. 20 [sic], 1923, the remains were interred in Middlebury, Vt.”
