Zebulon Edgerton I was born at Norwich, Connecticut on November 14, 1728, the elder son of Samuel and Margaret (Abell) Edgerton.  He was a farmer and resided in Franklin (Norwich) his entire life.

Zebulon was married on July 9, 1753 at the Bozrah Congregational Church in Norwich to Elizabeth Tracy, daughter of John and Margaret (Hyde) Tracy, also of Norwich.  Elizabeth was born at Norwich on May 1, 1732.  Zebulon and Elizabeth had a family of nine children – two sons and seven daughters.  The family was fully recorded in the Norwich Vital Records (VRp I:318 & I:515).  All but one of their children – younger son, John – survived to adulthood.

Zebulon and Elizabeth were affiliated with the Franklin Congregational Church and both their deaths were later recorded there.  An “Elisabeth Edgerton” who was admitted to the Church August 27, 1809 “on profession” (ChR 1:37) may have been the widow, Elizabeth (Tracy) Edgerton.  Five of Zebulon and Elizabeth’s daughters – Elizabeth, Margaret, Ann, Bethiah and Rachel – were married at the Franklin Church.

The household of Zebulon Edgerton was recorded in the 1790 Federal Census of New London County, Connecticut (pg. 172), as follows:

1 male “of 16 years and upward”  (Zebulon); and,

3 females  (wife Elizabeth, and two daughters - probably Rachel and Asenath).

Zebulon Edgerton died at Franklin, Connecticut on February 6, 1796.  His death was recorded at the Franklin Congregational Church on that date as, “Zebulun Edgerton, aged 67 years”. (ChR 1:443)  An identical date and age are recorded on his gravestone in Gagertown Cemetery.

Zebulon Edgerton died without a will.  A distribution of the estate was filed with the Norwich District Probate Court on April 5, 1797, by John Gager and Joseph Hyde.  The distribution was made among Zebulon’s widow (ie. Elizabeth, not mentioned by name), and his seven daughters –  Silence, Elizabeth, Bethiah, Asenath, Margaret, Ann and Rachel.  Each of the daughters was set out an equal portion of the estate valued at £3:8:10½.  Together with the “widows third”, the total value of the estate was approximately £35:14 and comprised eighteen acres and forty-five rods of land.  The only surviving son, Zebulon, was not included in the distribution.  It is assumed that he had already received lands from his father before his death; and indeed neighboring lands “of Zebulon Edgerton” are referred to in the distribution.

Mrs. Elizabeth (Tracy) Edgerton survived her husband over twenty years.  She died at Franklin, Connecticut on October 5, 1821, her death being recorded at the Franklin Congregational Church on that date as, “Mrs. Elizabeth Edgerton, aged 89 years”. (ChR 1:447)  Elizabeth’s death is also recorded in a letter written by her youngest daughter, Asenath, to her sister Mrs. Ann (Edgerton) Wales in the Fall of 1827 (see FG7).  According to the letter, “Mother Died Octr 4th 1821 aged 89”.  Elizabeth was buried in the family plot at Gagertown Cemetery, where her husband and young son, John, were previously interred.
