General Sites

 

§  Ancestry.com

One of the first and most comprehensive genealogical sites, Ancestry.com contains a broad collection of searchable databases, including census indexes, vital records, newspapers and periodicals, immigration records, land records, local and state directories, and miscellaneous genealogical publications.  Access to most of the databases requires a subscription (monthly or annual), which also includes Ancestry’s monthly publication and additional CD-rom software.

§  Rootsweb.com

One of the largest and broadest genealogical sites available, Rootsweb (now in partnership with Ancestry.com) offers numerous search engines, retrieving information all across the internet.  Rootsweb also hosts numerous genealogy and family history based webpages.

§  FamilySearch Genealogy Service

The Latter Day Saints’ searchable website includes online versions of their International Genealogical Index, Pedigree Resource Files and Ancestral Files, as well as an online catalog of the Salt Lake City Family History Library holdings, the Social Security Death Index and information on local Family History Centers.

§  Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness

“RAOGK is a global volunteer organization.  With over 4000 volunteers in every U.S. state and many international locations, we have helped thousands of researchers.  Our volunteers take time to do everything from looking up courthouse records to taking pictures of tombstones.  All they ask in return is reimbursement for their expenses (never their time) and a thank you.”  I encourage you to volunteer to this excellent organization.

§  Genealogy.com

The Genealogy.com website, in partnership with FamilyTreeMaker, offers a wide variety of search features, both of its own databases and throughout the internet.  Also available through subscription are a wide variety of online archives (previously available only on CD), including census images and vital records indexes.  Genealogy.com also sponsors an Edgerton surname message board (see below).

§  GenealogyLibrary.com

Genealogy.com’s online library contains transcriptions of over 3000 genealogical and historical titles, including family genealogies, vital records publications and Federal Census Indexes.  The site also contains a growing collection of 1850 Federal Census Images (fully indexed and searchable).  Access to the library requires a monthly or annual subscription.

§  US GenWeb Project

The United States GenWeb Project home page contains links to each of the individual states (and thence further to specific counties and/or towns).  The site also offers a search of the US GenWeb holdings, mostly submitted by volunteers.

§  My Trees.com

An online collection of user submitted pedigrees and records, sponsored by Kindred Konnections.  The site is indexed and searchable by name and locality.  (Subscription required)

Ancestry.com Census Images

An ongoing project by Ancestry.com to place online the complete United States Federal Census from 1790 through 1930 (excluding the 1890 Census, which was largely destroyed).  A subscription is required for access to the images (annual or monthly).

Genealogy.com US Census Collection

The Federal Census for The United States 1790 – 1930, partially indexed and searchable by surname, and browseable by state.  (Subscription required – annual or monthly)

 

§  Vital Records Images and Indexes

California Death Index

Located at Rootsweb.com, this database contains a searchable index of California death records between 1940 and 1997.  (Free)

Cuyahoga County, Ohio Historical Marriage License Index

A searchable database of marriage records (1810 – April 1998) kept the Cuyahoga County Probate Court.  (Free)

Illinois Statewide Marriage Index

A project of the Illinois State Archives and the Illinois State Genealogical Society, this database provides an index of marriages recorded throughout Illinois from 1763 to 1900.  The database is searchable by bride’s name, groom’s name, and county of marriage.  (Free)

Illinois State Death Certificate Index

Hosted by the Illinois State Archives, this fully searchable database offers abstracted information from Illinois death certificates (currently from 1916 – 1950) held at the Illinois Department of Public Health.  (Free)

Kentucky Vital Records Index

The Kentucky Vital Records Index currently covers death certificates for the years 1911 through 1992, as well as recent marriages and divorces (1973 – 1993).  (Free)

Michigan Online Death Certificate Index

The Genealogical Death Indexing System of Michigan (GENDIS), currently covers death certificates for the years 1867 – 1897.  (Free)

Minnesota Online Death Certificate Index

Sponsored by the Minnesota Historical Society, the searchable database currently indexes death certificates issued in Minnesota between 1906 and 2000.  (Free)

Ohio Online Death Certificate Index

Sponsored by the Ohio Historical Society, this searchable site contains an index of Ohio death certificates for the years 1913 through 1937.  (Free)

Texas Death Index

Located at Rootsweb, this database contains a searchable index of Texas death records between 1964 and 1998.  (Free)

Cemetery Records Online

A searchable collection of online cemetery transcriptions submitted by volunteers.  The database is searchable by surname and locality.  (Free)

Find A Grave

A searchable database of cemetery records submitted by volunteers.  The site offers a variety of search options (by name, cemetery, location, etc.), as well as discussion groups, photos and obituaries.  (Free)

Brooklyn Daily Eagle

An online database of a searchable images from the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, published between 1841 and 1902.  (Free)

Cleveland Public Library Necrology Files

A searchable database “produced from a microfilmed copy of an alphabetical card file containing local cemetery records and newspaper death notices gathered by the staff of the Cleveland Public Library”.

Fort Wayne and Allen County Obituaries 1841 – 1900

An online database hosted by the Allen County Public Library, providing vital statistics abstracted from obituaries in various Allen County Newspaper for the years 1841 through 1900.  The database is searchable by name, date and miscellaneous notes.  (Free)

Old Fulton New York Postcards

Hosted by Thomas M. Tryniski, tbis excellent site archives images (in pdf format) from numerous central New York Historical Newspapers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.  The site offers a number of search features.  (Free)

Vermont Chronicle Index

An online database by Sylvia R. Wilson, providing an index of death notices and obituaries from the Vermont Chronicle, which “was published weekly in Bellows Falls, VT from April, 1826 to October, 1828, then in Windsor, VT from Oct, 1828 to April 1898.”  Digital copies and electronic images of the notices can be ordered through the website.  (Free)

The Official Federal Land Patent Records Site

Provided by the United States Department of the Interior – Bureau Of Land Management, this searchable site contains a database of land patents issued by the United States Government issued between 1820 and 1908 (mostly in midwestern and western states).  The site contains online images of many of the original deeds.  (Free)

 

§  Probate Records

Sampubco

Hosted by W. David Samuelsen, the site provides an index of will testators in eleven states (predominantly northeastern), together with links to wills already transcribed and posted to the internet.  Copies of wills not yet posted can be ordered through the site.  (Free)
