Murder Victim. This article was printed in the Tampa Tribune on Friday, August 22, 1924. "DADE CITY MAN KILLED IN ROW OVER BORROWED AUTO" DADE CITY, Aug. 21 - James Eiland, 35 years old, automobile mechanic of Dade City, was shot and fatally wounded at his home about 9 o'clock Thursday night. John Cray, about 26, a worker on highway construction, is in jail charged with killing him. The police reported that Cray and his father, Ben Cray, went to the home of Eiland to settle a dispute over a debt alleged to be due Cray for damage to his motor car which he said Cray had wrecked while driving. The attempt at settlement resulted in a quarrel, the police said, and was terminated when Cray shot Eiland through the body with a pistol. Eiland died in a few minutes. John Cray was arrested about twenty minutes after the shooting at the Cray home. He denies that he shot Eiland or that he was there. Police said, however, that the elder Cray admitted the two had gone to the Eiland house and that young Cray had shot Eiland. It is believed the only witnesses to the shooting besides the elder Cray were the wife and five children of Eiland."
