This
obituary was found on a Ancestry.com tree contributed by Morgan_Joyce [The Luverne Journal-July 06,
1932] In memory of our departed friend, brother and former pastor, Rev. Chas. L Eiland. Born
March 20, 1852 died Feb. 26th 1932. Joined the Friendship Baptist Church at the age of 17 and remained
a faithful member of this church his entire life. He was ordained to the Ministry July 25th 1884.
Served this church as pastor approximately 35 years. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Minnie (Jordan)
Eiland, also three sons and four daughters, all children of his former marriage to Miss Genora Driskell
who preceded him to the grave several years. He served Moderator of the Crenshaw County Baptist Association
for 20 years. Was instrumental in the establishing of many churches of Baptist faith. He served
one term in the State Legislature, being elected by his farmer friends known as the Populist or People
party. He was a member of Old Bullock Lodge of Masons for a number of years and stood true to its every
cause.
Truly a good man loved practically by all who knew him, has gone to his reward. We had
the pleasure and privilege of hearing bro. Eiland preach quite a number of times. His sermons were
always models of simplicity, filled with brotherly kindness and human sympathy, a love unfeigned and
that could be felt. He was characterized with a simple dignity that secured him that fine respect
so delightful to all ministeries and it is becoming to congregations and individuals.
He was
a keen penetrating thinker and writer, often furnishing timely articles for the home papers. An uncompromising
champion of the right as God gave him to see the right, he ever lived the finer life. While advocating
the same kind of living to all who came within the sphere of his influence he was often heard to say,
"I believe if man prayed more they would be tempted less".
Who can attempt to measure the continuing
influence of the life of a good man? Verily it is like the path of the just that shineth more and more
until the perfect day. It is our desire that a copy of his memorial be written upon our church records,
a copy furnished his widow and that it be published so that his children and friends may have a copy
also.
