Barney was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, and served on the Church Vestry. He was one of the founders of Boy Scout Troop 14. He served as assistant Scout Master and Troop Committee Chairman for a number of years. During years of service to the Boy Scouts he was awarded the Sleeping Merit Badge by the Staff of Camp Yatasee.
