About James Elmo Gold:
Elmo, as he was known, carried a pistol and worked in a saloon until he left Mendoza about at the age
of 16. He and Lucy lived on the Ward homeplace in far eastern Williamson County, near the Bastrop and
Lee County lines. Elmo was a farmer and loved playing baseball in the country leagues that dotted the
central Tx area. He also worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression and
at Camp Swift, in Bastrop County, working German prisoners of war during World War II. He was well-respected
by his crew and he saw to their needs, like extra tobacco and food. Elmo came across one prisoner named
Arno Gold who was a Wehrmacht army regular in the German army. Arno was supposedly from the same area
in Germany as the family and bore a striking resemblance to Elmo's brother Vernon. However, no information
could be obtained due to Arno's shell-shocked condition. - email from Mark Gold
