About John Ward:
John Ward came to Tx in 1857 from Clark County, Mississippi and eventually settled in Trinity
County. According to an affidavit from John's friend, Ben Roberts, they served together in the Confederacy
near the end of the Civil War down on the Rio Grande. The affidavit was filed to aid John in receiving
a Confederate pension. According to Roberts, they both joined the Confederacy in Corpus Christi, in
Nueces County, Tx in November of 1864. They were in Company D, Benevides' regiment, Giddings' Battallion
commanded by John S. "RIP" Ford. John and Ben were in the company that took horses from King's ranch
to Brownsville to replace lost mounts. While they were there, they engaged Union forces in the battle
at Palmito Ranch on May 13, 1865. Ward and Roberts remained in the camp that night and took their prisoners
to Brownsville the next day. When they received news of Lee's surrender, they traveled to Roberts'
home in Caldwell County. After resting his horse, John returned to his home in Trinity County. John
eventually settled in Williamson County in January of 1869 and farmed. -email from Mark Gold
