About John Franklin Caffey:
John F. Caffey Sr., 81, McCormick executive Originally published March 16, 2005 John F. Caffey
Sr., a World War II aviator and a retired McCormick & Co. Inc. executive, died of a heart attack March
9 at St. Joseph's of the Pines Rehabilitation Center in Pinehurst, N.C. The former Timonium resident
was 81.
Mr. Caffey retired in 1986 after 37 years with McCormick, the international spice manufacturer
based in Baltimore County. He served as vice president and managing director of McCormick's International
Division and as a member of the company's board of directors. He moved to North Carolina shortly after
he retired.
Born in Salt Lake City, Mr. Caffey was a decorated naval aviator who received the
Navy Cross, the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal. He served in World War II as a pilot aboard
the carrier USS Lexington and saw action in major military battles in the Pacific -- at Wake, Gilbert,
Marshall, Truk, Palau and Saipan islands. He received a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in
business administration from Stanford University. A memorial service was held Monday in Pinehurst.
Mr.
Caffey is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marcella Ivers Caffey; four sons, John F. Caffey Jr. of
Los Altos Hills, Calif., Andrew A. Caffey of Chevy Chase, William I. Caffey of Corvallis, Ore., and
James Caffey of Columbia; a sister, Marian C. Miller of San Mateo, Calif.; and seven grandchildren.
